Churnet Valley Yank Farewell December 30

It was mentioned on the CVR Aything Goes thread that December 31 sees 5197's boiler certificate expire. With no trains operating on this day it was said that the 30th will be her final day in service. Anybody else attending ? Looks like for £10 you'll get 5 round trips with her.

Unfortunately 5197 was withdrawn from traffic last Saturday with a leak on the main steam pipe whilst in light steam as cover for 5199 on the Santa specials. It is not deemed to feasible to repair the main steam pipe with 2 weeks left on the boiler ticket.

A replacement engine will be arriving at the railway today.

5197 RIP

After nearly 11 years running she deseves a break

Not many locos have acheived that

Well done to all who have kept here going

No doubt it will be short break and return with her twin sister

 

Staffordshire is now a much quieter place.

 

I had a couple of great rides behind her when she was at the NNR. A great loco, hopefully she will be back working again soon.

 

An awe inspiring loco - although only at it's best at the hands of a certain few CVR crews (some of whom post on here). I've had it on several lines with decent performances but nowhere was just quite the same as it's home base.

It's a shame she went out with a whimper rather than her characteristic deafening performances, but here's hoping there's many more of these to come when 5197 and 6046 emerge. I personally can't wait.

I think this loco amongst others went a long way towards proving that the best engines don't have cycling animals on the sides....

 

Hear hear! (literally!)

The sound of it completely drowning out 92203 on the stone trains at Merehead will remain in the memory for years! As will a run behind it at Churnet in heavy snowfall

 

One day (and it will happen) the doubleheading of 5197 and 6046 storming up Cauldon low will be a hot topic on this forum

Now that will be a sight to see

And the noise.........!

 

This is very bad news... it is a great loco and I hope to see it back on the rails very soon

 

Dissapointed we don't get one final run. What's coming over as replacement though, may still come over to escape turkey sandwiches!

 

S100 30075 has arrived at the railway today and will be on steam test tomorrow

Was there both days, 5197 didn't run saturday, think they tried to fix it on saturday as they appeared to be doing steam test on the sunday morning, I took a photo's of the steam test and some video footage. Was hoping to make it back to see her this weekend.

Photo's will be up tomorrow, video probably over the weekend, was going to leave the steam test to add to this weekends running, but looks like thats it!

 

Just posted last weekend's video, as stated below mainly 5199, but I slipped in a last chance shot of 5197 on steam test on the sunday morning.

First weekend in December we visited Churnet Valley Railway to catch the S160 5197 before her ticket ran out. Unfortunately it was not to be as she failed that morning the 5th, a vain attempt was made later that day and the footage at the end and start of this film shows her during a steam test on the 6th which she failed again, so this is likely to be the last footage of her in steam for some time. Sitting in her place for the weekend was GWR 5199.

S100 looks intresting by the way, I will have to try and catch her some time while she is on the line.

 

Great video, well presented, loved the frost covered telephone wires,so atmospheric.

 

Any clue as to what's out this week? Will more than likely b down on wednesday with a few mates.
