Thanks to all at the GCR

Another big round of applause from me to all concerned at the GCR for a fantastic weekend. Non-stop action, the years just rolled back, 1960's all over again. Looked like the trains were all well filled to help swell the coffers. Bonus on Saturday was the appearance of 30777, hansom machine particularly in Brunswick. Difficult to know how you will top it next time, but equal would be brillant! Thanks once again, Harold.

    VIDEO: GCR 'Steam Railway' Gala

I have uploaded a video to YouTube of yesterday's action at this excellent gala. I quite often, though not always, get a shot of passing trains on the GCR. This time I got four! Three of them are incorporated into the film, the other is on the cutting room floor.

My thanks to all at Loughborough who took part in the gala and I hope everyone enjoys the film

I was manning a salestand at Quorn on Sunday and we couldn't have wished for a better location. Just like the good old days with trains coming and going every few minutes. Well done the GCR for a top class event.

Great afternoon on saturday - pity i couldn`t have stopped longer but the wife and friends had other plans for the rest of the day.( waste of a family rover ticket :( )
I thought the timetable was brill ! - dont think it as possible for more trains and a goods between each passenger service was great. The WD looked fantastic with the windcutters. Didnt see 78019 running on saturday - any problems with it?

Enjoyed the gala myself although am amazed to still see 45305 on shed. Is she undergoing more attention following her poor quality overhaul, or was her heavy shunt the other year heavier than reported?

The coaches most heavily involved in that collision are not in service, those being E9124E and a TSO. E9124E has been out of service for a very long time.

5305 is undergoing an overhaul, the previous overhaul was most certainly not "poor quality" and it is as a direct result of the heavy shunt. The work on the engine was delayed by work being concentrated on other engines such as 70013 and 1744.

A normal 'heavy shunt' shouldn't require a full general overhaul to cure.

78019 was a failure Saturday morning, 30777 Sir Lamiel deputising on 78019s duties however 78019 was in traffic on Saturday afternoon, on Sunday we were disposing 30777 in preparation on having its boiler drained and being split from its tender and other jobs before 30777 Sir Lamiel leaves the GCRailway this week.

    GCR Gala

An excellent Gala as always.I can't see any other railway being able to match the frequency or variety.Lots of freight trains in the mix as well which really makes things interesting. It was so busy at times on saturday afternoon that trains were having to queue up to get into Loughborough.Well done to everyone involved in the timetabling and organisation of what was probably the best gala I have seen. I look forward to the next with bated breath because that was something that will take some matching.

That group responsible for 45305 also look after 70013 and 30777, when some groups have trouble looking after 1 loco it's unfair to criticise a group juggling 3 when two are mainline certified and heavily used.

From a visual point of view it was shame the LMS saloons were attached to the south ends of the coaching formations. Why not stick them on the northern ends of the sets (like the Beavertail) to avoid them looking less than prototypical behind the loco?

As a video maker I disagree. The inclusion of Stanier and Gresley stock, even in the very minimal way that the GCR can do this, adds to the appearance of the trains. It's a pity that the GCR can't do more in this way, like adding vans to the passenger trains; it would enhance the prototypical appearance of the trains.

It would be good if the GCR bought at least one of the unrestored Stanier and Gresley vehicles as a potential addition to their fleet. There is a twelve wheel Stanier sleeper that is about to be scrapped on the MHR. This vehicle could be converted to a catering coach. It would take time and money, but it could be done.

    Regards

PS: I hope this post won't start up another of those 'photographers don't contribute threads', I bought a 'Senior Rover' as a contribution to the event.
