Can anyone put together a list of current new builds (SG and NG), their current state of play and location?
There seems to be more and more of them - a promising development for the future of steam traction...

boldford mentions "Catch Me Who Can", and it was so interesting earlier this year to see said replica steaming away, even though up on blocks, alongside 71000 at Bridgnorth shed during members day.
Truly the first and...well I was going to say "the last", but I had better say "the ultimate in British passenger steam locomotive development", 1808 - 1954.

I stood for a while and pondered just how far locomotive development has taken us.

Iron Duke was NRM I think, but Firefly was mainly built at Didcot by the Firefly trust.

If you're including narrow gauge, there is 'Annie' at the Groudle Glen, not to mention the two recent German new-builds.

Well, I suppose this'll have to do until someone decides to build one from scratch. Even a lookalike is an interesting proposition ( although I can hear the word "waste of a good locomotive" being whispered in the background!)...

OTT it is, and austerity with a tender and a black motor number is still an austerity but with a tender and a black motor number! It would be VERY nice to see a genuine 700 but unless one is actually built then we won't see one. ](*,) And i thought painting them in BR black was bad enough.

Back on topic if we are to include 'modern' traction there is the electric Polar Bear on the Groudle Glen. And the BR 2mt thats going to be butchered to look like a BR 2mt tank.

... except that anyone who thinks that a butchered austerity looks like a Black Motor has evidently never seen a Black Motor, and has no concern for the austerity.

A proper Black Motor would be an interesting new build: it shares a lot of major components (boiler, cylinders, driving wheels, motion) with both an M7 (which exists) and a K10 4-4-0 (which doesn't), so there would be certain economies whereby you could do two extinct classes and help support a third existing class with spares from just a single set of patterns etc. (And my knowledge of such things is sketchier, but I suspect certain extinct Scottish classes designed by either Dugald or Peter Drummond probably also share a fair number of components, further reducing costs if some kind of semi-batch build was planned). Plus, being a relatively simple, moderately sized engine, it would be the right size and power for all but the biggest heritage lines - and probably even on those ideal out of season.

A key question when thinking of new builds (I'm talking standard gauge here; I don't know much about narrow gauge or miniature) is what are the desirable characteristics? Obviously there are operational ones (such as "is it the right size for what I have in mind?" - no good building Tornado if your planned use is on a 2 mile branch line); general functional ones (such as "we need a modern, lightweight 2-6-2T with good route availability and crew-friendly features like rocking grates and mechanical lubricators" - which is a crude paraphrase of some of the thinking that resulted in 82045) and specific project ones (such as "We have a suitable boiler to build a Brighton Atlantic").

But beyond that, there are aesthetic considerations. I'd venture to suggest that any new build should provide the same sensations as the original you are replicating. So it should look like the original (even if there are visually hidden differences, like the fabricated rather than cast cylinders on Beachy Head); sound like the original (which means same boiler pressure, draughting arrangements, valve events and so on); perform like the original (which means the same boiler parameters such as firebox size and shape, same steam passages and cylinders and motion) etc. On those criteria, however useful a tender engine austerity may be; it in no way gives an impression of a Black Motor: it looks completely different, will sound different and perform differently. It may be a decent engine in its own right; but under no manner or means can you say it is representative of a Black Motor, whatever number you paint on the side!

Butchery usually involves removing parts, not adding them!

Various bits and bobs have been collected for the conversion, but nothing else.
