Thanks Ian interesting that, so the second tender may not be permanant. Certainly if the operators are making a loss from it they're not gonna be too keen to have their tours losing money.

I would think that tour operators take into account the loss of two coaches out of the consist and adjust their prices accordingly.

If you reduced a 10-coach train to "8 carriages plus 2nd tender", you'd need to bump up ticket prices by 25% to bring in the same amount of money. Not sure how many would pay that much more.

You may think that, but in reality all the tour operators have indicated that they cannot envisage any circumstances under which they would wish to use the water carrier, and no tour operator has ever booked it to date.
The only reason it was used last Saturday was the fact that the owner wanted to use it! As he had given Bittern free of charge for the event I'm sure the Brighton Belle Trust were happy to go along with this.

The weight of any useful sized tank of water will be well over the carrying capacity of a PMV or any similar parcels/luggage van. Hence the need for a specialist vehicle such as a converted tender or freight wagon.

I don't think anybody on the train was complaining about the second tender, the only ones moaning appear to be that funny breed of live stock that farmers now have, you know the ones that stand in fields on small aluminium step ladders :-#

Main line steam is going through troubled times, anything that can change it up a little such as, dare I say liveries and identity changes or a second tender can only be a good thing.

Just wait until they stick the water carrier with Tornado to get a non stop run to Tyne Yard.

    I think it looks fine.

To be honest, if the trip is markets the right way and the non-stop routing could be non-stop then it certainly could work..

So if it had 2 tenders and an S & C routing, where could we start from / to Carlilse non-stop perhaps ?

Whats the new range of Bittern about 250 miles ? - could make some Scottish runs interesting ?, Norwich / London maybe ?

I wouldnt paint it as a coach, they tried that with 4472 and take a look at it.
Leave it part of the A4.. for once it makes a British locomotive look a bit more meaty..I always look at 71000 with it's diminutive tender.. it's a monster engine with a shopping trolley behind it.
Historical Perfection, maybe not.. but neither is much else about our railways today, but it doesnt stop the hobby !

  9. Ypu mean that breed whose outpourings of hot air and outspoken bull, er, shine are in direct inverse proportion to the amount they actually contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the things they moan so vociferously about?

I woulden't say it's that much of an eyesore to be frank, espacially not when there is a multi coloured rainbow of stock in tow, there's talk of 6024's water carrier getting coach or Siphon G type cladding, but is it used enough to justify such an expense ?.

Indeed, I wonder how many people would turn up line side to watch a malacite Bulleid light pacific running with a Stainer 4000 gallon tender in black (34007 with 45379's tender on the MHR perhaps!), or a Crimson Stainer Coronation with a black 'LMS' lettered WD eight wheeled tender?

Quite a few I would imagine. It was suggested for a photo charter with 34081 some time ago but nowt came of it. Coupling it to an LMS tender wasn't going to be that straightforward IIRC.

I have no objections to two tenders being used, I feel that Flying Scotsman looked brilliant with its two tenders in Alan Pegler's days. However, I'm sorry to see the second tender that they have built for Bittern, it doesn't look remotely right. Basically it looks like a van rather than a tender, the roof profile is wrong and doesn't match the engines tender. Pity, if they'd copied Flying Scotsman's original water carrier, it would have looked superb. Incase anyone doesn't know what the difference is between the current water carrier and the original Flying Scotsman water carrier, take a look at the pics on Neil Dimmer's site of Scotsman in the USA: http://www.steamlocomotives.photos.gb.net/c1602742.html

I thought Bittern was using Flying Scotsmans water carrier.

Only the chassis. The body is a completely new structure.

But it's not really. Tour organisers don't want it and pathing problems still exist even though watering problems are much reduced.
Unless things change on either front I doubt it will see much use.
