This loco was moved from storage into the loco shed at Bridgnorth on Friday to have it's bolier removed for overhaul (taking up the space recently vacated by 43106 in the boiler shop). Like the 'Pig' this is considered to be a long term project with a probable 3-4 year timescale, it's condition however is considered to be better than the pig's as it has been stored under a tarpauline and most work is expected to be concentrated on the boiler with the bottom end intially considered to be in good nick. Expect other locos to be out before 75069 with 2857 progressing well, 34027 under (very heavy) overhaul and a few wild cards to be considered such as 1501 or even 4150 which has had a lot of work quietly done on the bottom end at Bewdley. Another achievement to consider is that with completion of 75069 and 4150 all locos in the SVR fleet will have been restored from scrapyard condition and all stored locos will be undercover, viewable to the public and in good external condition. This will prevent a repeat of the deterioration and damage caused to 43106 in preservation years and the additional £70k cost to her overhaul bill to put this right. The SVR is close to the knuckle with loco availability at the moment with up to 6 needed at any one time over the summer. With only 8 in service and with 7714 reportedly 'fragile' and close to the end of her certificate, 43106 and 2857 are desperately needed.

It was interesting looking at the photos of this shunting move that have appeared elsewhere, that the loco was moved with the rods on, so even though in long-term storage, someone must have been adding a drop of lube oil now and then. ( as in pistons and valves)
Tyres look a bit thin though!

Re 4150, the "Bewdley Prairie", I understood the bottom half was done, so maybe the boiler could be sorted fairly quickly, was reported to be in good condition, however I think this loco needs a lot of new metalwork in the shape of tanks, bunker etc. Or at the very least a lot of work on the "remains" of the existing ones. Correct me if I am wrong, but this loco has not steamed ex-Barry as yet?

Judging by what I saw on Saturday the shunt move actually took place then as opposed to Friday, however, I appreciate "acorb" is only quoting from another source.
Fortunately I was there on Saturday to photograph the event. Follow the link to my fotopic site to see the movement of 75069.

    Cheers,

    Paul

4150 is the last unrestored Barry loco on the SVR. I think the boiler is expected to go to the boiler shop very soon but if there is expensive work to be completed elsewhere, such as new tanks, then this could explain why 75069 has been given preference for now. I know there are a lot of people that would be keen to see this loco back as 5164 has proven very capable and popular this time round now that it's steaming problems have been cured. I think it had a bit of a bad reputation last time it steamed but this was cured during restoration, i'm sure someone else will provide more accurate info. To be honest I think these large praries are just about perfect for the SVR in terms of size, power and bunker first running. Maybe someone has more info on the plans for 1501? This is quite frankly an awesome loco for it's size and a firm favourite of mine. I have unfinished business with it too as it was the only loco I missed running behind at an autumn gala a couple of years ago and it was withdrawn shortly after..I missed it by only 5 minutes!
I wasn't there for the 75069 move (I live a bit too far away these days) so indeed I was relying on alternative sources such as 'elsewhere'! Thanks for posting the pictures Mr. Hillingdon.

  5. 1501

im only repeating what i have been told by somebody "in the know" last Friday
43106 will steam shortly then into the paint shop
2857 will be next into traffic, followed by 34027
75069 is expected to have the boiler lifted anytime now, although it is thought to be a big job like 43106, (it should be noted that 43106 was transported from Highley with rods ON !)
    www.flickr.com/photos/celestialtoymaker/
(shows photographs of 43106 newly arrived at Bridgnorth for overhaul)
1501 in the meantime is expected out of the engine house for a quick return to traffic within 12 months, it is thought that a quick re-tube will get it back into traffic ?
7714 was reported in the SVR news as requiring the spare boiler and restricted to light duties only, howeverat the time of my last visit she was in charge of 8 coaches and doing ok, the crew stated that the loco had indeed been given the spare boiler and all problems solved - my source says otherwsie
47383 is said to be next out fo the engine house but, i was told there is pressure to get 7819 back to the SVR and into traffic, and aslso 4930.
4150 is described as ongoing, shouldnt be too long and money is alledged to be available for this ??
600 Gordon however i have been told by several people in the know, will never steam again, i was told to look tat its position int he engine house (first in) and told it is NOT intended to bring back out EVER !

again im only relaying what i was told by a third party who is "in the know" so if this is incorrect, its not directly my fault......

    Re: 1501

7714-I thought that the spare boiler wasn't ready to be fitted?
47383 - will it really be next out. I can think of 3 other engines in there that would be more suitable to the railway (1501, 80079 & 7325)
4930 - It's time must come soon. The fund raising has been going on for this engine for quite some time ( I got a lovely Hagley hall wall clock off them!!!) so really it's a question of when not if.
7819- Maybe the railway could overhaul it in time for it to be a replacement for 7802. Maybe the 3 manors could in the future be rotated so that there are two in traffic and one under overhaul. They are well liked and suitable on the railway so maybe this policy could be pursued - just a thought.
600 - Deffo not first in. If the Jinty is to be overhauled then they'll have to move 600 to get it out. As for never steaming again, i hope that it does. Despite what the critics say it is a good engine (some people need to remember what 600 was designed for), powerful, Dual braked and looks impressive to younger eyes. I myself remember as a kid how much Gordon impressed me - nothing to do with thomas btw.
43106 - Looking forward to this one. Not only unique but also of the right size for the SVR. It will also give the SVR a unique set of 3 working lms design moguls each of different design and power class.
1501 - the engine that no one thought would be very good but proved everyone wrong. One of my hero engines hope we do see it back soon!
75069 - Another useful engine for the SVR look forward to it's return lets hope it's not to long coming!
2857 - The first engine I ever had a footplate ride on and another useful engine although cold tender first in winter.
34027 - Despite it's size another useful engine that I look forward to seeing in steam again.

Re the above, 47383 requires a new firebox, or at least a new inner copper firebox, for which the copper sheet has recently been purchased, or is about to be ordered. (info courtesy of SVR News) Some £18,000 was raised through two raffles aimed at the purchasing of the new firebox materials. Maybe the loco is required out of the Engine House for dismantling for "dimensions" and other preparatory work.

1501 was originally considered for a "quickie" overhaul, but I think an examination of the loco showed that further work would be necessary.

7714 is in the last year of its ticket, and a spare boiler is being worked on as time permits. A contract has recently been awarded to Tyseley Locomotive Works to press and flange new front and rear outer steel firebox plates.

Latest word on other overhauls apart from 2857 and 75069 was that 1501, 5764, 7714, and 7325 are all "competing" time-wise, ie no decisions made as yet.

    Re: 1501

I'm not sure that your 3rd party knows quite as much as they make out....

43106 - now in the paint shop

2857 - correct, expected to be next in traffic after 43106

34027 - will be ready when it's ready, not imminent

75069 - correct, expected to be a big job on the boiler

1501 - firebox has done 10 1/2 years work, so probably more than a retube. Is one of the 'quick' options.

7714 - limited steamings and boiler is examined at each washout. Hasn't been restricted to light duties since its crank axle was done a couple of years back. The spare boiler is being overhauled as discussed above.

47383 - money now available for the firebox copper, but unlikely to be out of the Engine House just yet.

7819 - 1st efforts to raise funds have only just started, so unlikely to come back from Swindon any time too soon.

4930 - hopefully sometime soon (in my opinion!)

4150 - now a rolling chassis, boiler regarded as being very good. Needs new tanks and bunker.

600 - Sounds like a load of pub talk I think. No plans for it at the moment, but it has never been decreed that it will never steam again. It's position in the Engine House means nothing - that is to do with arranging the exhibits in the best way for visitors. The 2 engines at the back are 7325 & 47383, both of which will be coming out!

OK so if you cannot stand by these comments as correct then why make them at all :-k trying to then deny liability "its not directly my fault" is pointless.

    Thats a bit harsh.

At least the poster did qualify the original comments, and it has brought confirmation from others close to the railway.

Net result is that you know more about the prospects for SVR steam motive power than you did before!

    Re: 1501

OK, I tried to be polite last time by sending you a PM & you gave me a positive response. But I see you are still at it!
My complaint to the forum management seems to have had little affect.

  13. I have already said as much as i dare about the person who told me these things, all i can say is he is Bridgnorth based and does work in the loco department, mopre than that i would rather not say.
it is fare though that i have posted the info i should stand by what i have said even if it comes from a third party..........
i am not on here all the time, but will check in whenever its possible

No i havent been to the engine house, my wife wants to go in at some pint, im not fussed, i get an unnoficial walk round the shed when i visit from time to time and into the boiler shop, but havent been in this year, i have no information on 7325 but i do believe there has been talk of it coming out, it seems my info on 47383 may be a little sus, as i was under the impression its 1501 then 47383 out of engine house, for firebox work and new tanks ???

on the Manor front, my source says they would like to arrange a swap, when 7802 comes out of traffic, to send it to swindon and reclaim 7819, this i find hard to take in as somebody pointed out fund raising for 7819 has not long started............

didnt know 1501 had more problems than just a quick retube, although it was said this is meant to a short term stop gap to ease a possible loco shortage.

as for 600, im not having a go and saying it should reamin locked away and out of ticket, far from it, i think 600 should be allocated a place in que and put back to service, my last ride with Gordon, tender first from Bewdley to Kidderminster will not be forgotten for a long time, im told he is unreliable ? the flexible stays in the firebox give persistant trouble (N.Y.M.R. cope with Vera Lynn dont they ?) driving him in hot weather is reported to be like being in sauna, (The F.R. manages with The Fairlies and they must be hotter) and alledgedly he damges the track because he is a 2-10-0
Loco Crews are meant to dislike Gordon, and if he wasn't first in, im sorry, i havent been to see for myself.

For someone who has access to the running shed and boiler shop at Bridgnorth, I am surprised that celestial toymaker has not taken the opportunity of visiting The Engine House at Highley, and even more so that he has not taken note of all the press and publicity photos that show the locations of the various exhibits.

A cynic might suggest that he has 'bunked' the running shed and overheard some shed banter between staff. If he were really in the know, he would be aware of all the points that hassall_a has made, as they are well documented in the SVR News and other publications.

Which only goes to show you shouldn't believe all that you read on Nat Pres! (Or in some cases, any of what you read on Nat Pres) [-X

Well I for one would like to congratulate celestial toymaker for making the effort to bring this information to us.

It suprises me that that the SVR does not have an efficient and well maintained enthusiast website such as the Bluebell , WSR or Mid Hants.

Given the number of members it must have, and the wealth of material to populate such a site, I am suprised that the best they can come up with is http://www.gw-svr-a.org.uk/whats_new.html which was last updated on the 23rd June. A good site but only updated once a month.

It was noticeable that when the SVR wanted funds to repair the damage done by the floods a website was quickly set up that gave daily updates. Now that has been turned off.

All it takes is one dedicated volunteer with IT skills with access and contacts, and a determination to share his enthusiasm with the rest of us. The result as Tony Wood has shown at the Mid Hants is a million hit website that becomes a cheap and efficient marketing tool.

The only problem being that Celestial's 'information' is largely mis-information, as is a fair bit of the more recent posting that he has made, but I really don't feel like taking him to task twice, so I'll leave it there...

Anyway, I couldn't agree more with your comments about the SVR website and the drying up (excuse the pun) of the floodlines. You're not the 1st person to make either of those points...

  17. First of all i would like to thank the people that seem to appreciate that i am just another enthusiast as we ll are, and i am just trying to put info out there, if its harmful im sorry, but i dont see it that way, its my point of view from where i stand........

Yes its ture I BUNK BRIDGNORTH SHED, but i do get a guided tour or to be more exact, i get smuggled in, and i dont ever get questioned when i do get in the shed, but thats not up for discussion anyway, YES i alos listen to shed banter, i have NEVER said tha I AM IN THE KNOW, i actually said my information is being relayed from a person that IS IN THE KNOW, but my answer to the person who keeps puting death threats on my flickr, Bridgnorth MPD know who you are now.................

I lead a quiet existance, i cause no trouble, if the facts i post are not totaly accurate, that is unfortunate, i post what i believe to be true.

43106 entered the Paint Shop WEDNESDAY 22/07/2009 for final lining out, im told the cab floor still needs work, and August seems liek a realsitic target for traffic.

75069 i belive has now had the boiler lifted, if not then i was told that it is ready to be lifted.......

The first point makes the second point untrue. Unauthorised persons do cause trouble. They put the Railway's insurance, H&S risk assessment and other staff at risk. The SVR does not tolerate trespassers, and it takes a dim view of any member of staff encouraging trespass.

As far as a website goes, I, like many SVR members, despair at the lack of a good, enthusiast website. One day someone with the time, knowledge and ability will set one up, I am sure. I hope it's sooner rater than later.

No such thing as "a quick retube" for a new ticket nowadays. Policy is, at least, foundation ring out to remedy the grooving that inevitably occurs.
Chassis and tender sitting in the yard sans boiler for the world to see. Boiler being unpicked for investigation in the boilershop. I'll wait for those far more knowledgeable, about these things, to pronounce on its condition.

On the subject of 75069, although unrelated to any previous posts, does anyone know its shed allocation history?

The other two preserved ex-SR 75xxx's (75078 and 75079) I know spent most of their career working Waterloo-Basingstoke semi-fasts, being shedded firstly at Basingstoke then Eastleigh. 75069 seems to have been more of a wanderer. At one stage it was shedded at Dover, but I am sure I remember seeing a picture of it working a Victoria-East Grinstead train, hardly a turn for a Dover-based engine. It was presumably reallocated to one of the SWD sheds during its last years, but which one?

Any info would be appreciated. I'm pleased to hear news of this engine. It did work some main line trips in December 1993 from London to Brighton. I remember waiting to see it at Hassocks, but there was a landslip somewhere on the line due to heavy rain and the chap at the station said the train had been terminated. I was most upset to find out subsequently that it DID get through to Brighton, albeit very late.

With two "Southern" engines (the other being 34027) likely to be in steam at the SVR in about 3-4 years' time, a visit sounds an absolute must!
