Midland Railway - Butterley DMU Gala - Sat 19/Sun 20 - Rare Track

The Midland Railway – Butterley will be holding its annual DMU Gala this weekend, which this time will include the opportunity to travel over some rare track.

For the first time for a number of years some trains will use the south curve at Ironville, which is the MRB’s link with the mainline. Passenger trains normally use the north curve, which was once the third side of a triangular junction.


The event will mark a return to service for the line’s 66-year old Class 108 unit, which has been under heavy maintenance since the end of last year, having had attention to the brakes and the reversing system, as well as a heavy exam. Also appearing will be the only surviving class 141 in running order, which this year is celebrating 19 years in preservation, as well as two Class 142s, one in GMPTE orange livery and the other in Provincial two-tone blue.


An intensive timetable will be worked, commencing at 1000 each day, with all-day fares available at a bargain £18. Free parking is available at Butterley station DE53QZ but please note there is no access to the railway via the Swanwick Junction site.
