Steam Locomotive Gathering in Chemnitz

For the third weekend in August, countless historic steam and nostalgic diesel locomotives were once again on show and performed public excursion trains around Chemnitz and the two large roundhouses at the Hilbersdorf yard.

This short film shows the 2-10-2 tank engine also at Hetzdorf with the run-past at the old viaduct.
Plus all the other action including 01 1104, 35 1097 and 50 3616.

The Soviet diesel V 200 507 also featured for a parallel run to Oederan.

 

I visited on the Friday when there was probably slightly less activity but still an excellent event.
A sensible approach to H&S was adopted when locos were being moved around the site but otherwise access was available to most areas and locos were generally well placed for photography.
The Feldbahn line on the site is a nice added attraction too.
Thoroughly recommended, and in my view anyway, a less crowded event and more to see than the Dresden equivalent. (Although I have always enjoyed visits to that too)
My only complaint about Chemnitz was that when I went to get a bier to go with my lunch, they had sold out of Dunkel!
