12 mm in Mid-Kent from o5.00 to 09.30 - very light to start with but a much better spell around 08.00. And with high humidity the ground was still damp when I checked around 11.30. Plus 12 m last week.

No more rain since despite the BBC website suggesting thundery showers here all day. Despite the rainfall radar (actual observations) not having shown anything near Mid-Kent since 09.30.

There is a small band of light rain (12.05) gently moving north just on the French coast and heading towards Kent. But a short time move forward onto the forecast radar shows that suddenly turn into a storm system. Plus a storm generating not far south of Maidstone.

I think those involved in providing the BBC weather forecasts, and those doing the rainfall radar forecasts (an Annabel Ingelworthy relative perhaps) live and work in an underground location.

But what by Kent standards was a good drenching this morning, may start to make things move towards 35028 being out on its next booked turn with a diesel doing all the work? ie Red fire risk.

What the actual rain situation was over Kent this morning.

Done a round trip to Bridgnorth on the 50 this morning and it hasn’t stopped raining other than 15 minutes at Bridgnorth. Plenty more forecast

 

Have been working in Derby today- it rained non stop very heavily from approx 0830-1430.

So much so that one of the buildings on site has required evacuating due to the gullies on the roof becoming overwhelmed, partially flooding the building.

Heritage - Some railways are lifting theirs slowly. Others waiting a week or two.

 

On Metcheck London was being forecast another 30c day this week. That's been dialled back to 24/25, but it suggests there's still a big blob of hot that could elbow it's way back in.

Lots of periods of rain forecast, but very small amounts each time.

I would read that as wobbling back toward the usual pattern of atlantic weather, but by no means guaranteed.

Metcheck have been pretty much on the money all the way through the summer.

 

For once some rainfall actually intensified as it approached us in Surrey! 11mm from a thunderstorm-laden trough that has just passed. The lawn seemed to be whispering with joy!

 

We had a decent downpour this afternoon in Salisbury. The lawn is now approaching "Improved lawn green" - i.e. still yellow

Water butts are full - which is a bit of a bummer when there's a new larger one waiting to be plumbed in and the old ones need to be emptied first! And the mower's had an outing - green shoots are now visible

 

Despite several spells of rain. Parts of London appear to still be tinderboxes. LFB reportedly dealing with large fire near Wembley.

Thought it worth sharing this latest example of my gripe with BBC/MeteoGroup - taken from the same page, the text says getting windier by the end of the night, while the hourly breakdown shows the exact opposite! This sort of inconsistency/downright clashing is almost a daily thing now.

825 litre monster, replacing 2 standard 200-odd litre butts. Have also bought a 180l planter/butt for the front of the house, which will make watering easier. Ecosure do a good range.

 

What rain!
Here in Hertfordshire, I have had a few spots (no more than 1 mm) four or five times in the last 48 hours. Each shower is made the ground wet briefly and evaporated. Nothing has made if off the roof into the water-but.
I live in hopes, but ....

At our previous house there was a 10,000 litre, pumped rain storage tank built into the ground - we miss that now!

 

My parents' house had a well that served four terrace 1880s houses, in a long street of about 50 houses, similar all the way up. It was filled from roof water; where the overflow went, I have no idea, but it never went more than 4 foot or so from the top. Water was extracted by a bucket tied on to a rope. Some had a hand operated pump. I was told never to stand on the metal lid as it wasn't safe.

 

One of my great-aunts had a well covered by a metal plate near the back door of her end terrace of similar vintage - "Old Jack lives down there!" according to her husband, told as a warning to keep off said plate Unfortunately in later years after she died and we had the task of clearing her house, we discovered that water from the well had found another way out at the front of the house (which was lower than the back) and had rotted out some of the joists in her front parlour...
