    I think we will have sufficient rain for steam to return for heritage line use pretty soon, as preserved lines have sufficient mitigation measures to combat all but the very highest risk.
    Steam on the mainline will be struggling though for a little while yet.

    It was announced in July 2025 they would be changing back to Metoffice. Surprising over 12 months later they still haven’t?

    I think there is a slow transition in place and that doesn't finalise until the end of this year. Given the close links that the Met Office had with the Ministry of Defence - it's now with Dept of Science, Innovation and Technology - it never made sense for it to detach from the BBC. As we have discovered there are also subtle differences between different weather forecasting companies and that is because - surprise, surprise - in practice it is what I will call a 'technical art form'!

    If the forecased rain materialises over the next few days, the SVR is hoping to reintroduce steam from September 2nd.

    Interesting to see the floods in Spain and hail in the Pyrenees as big as golf balls, cycling had to be cancelled. Just nudge it north a bit and all will be okay :D
