Well as the title suggest any idea which Locomotive carried the longest Nameplate in length.

Was it one of the A4's

    Commonwealth of Australia
    or
    Domminion of New Zealand.

Be interesting to know which loco like I said carried the longest nameplate

First of all, you nweed to establish whether you are referring tojust whilst in BR service or including later names - if the latter, I think the Full plate carried by 45231 laid claim to be the longest. If not, didn't some of the regimental V2s have lengthy names?

In terms of overall length as opposed to number of characters, 34109 'SIR TRAFFORD LEIGH MALLORY' would have been a contender along with the previously mentioned A4s.

I was considering "Thomas the Tank Engine" or "Cadbury Bourneville No1" however this may be the winner:

60835 "The Green Howard, Alexandra, Princess of Wales own Regiment"

    and..

60809 "The Snapper, The East Yorkshire Regiment, The Duke of York's Own"

I always thought Dominion of New Zealand was the longest one, and I'm sure I read it somewhere too. Until I saw the two nameplates next to each other at the NRM. The Australia one is the longer.

Marston, Thompson & Evershed Ltd No.3 took some brass. Not the longest, but certainly occupies a good percentage of the available space.

I would have thought that 'The Somerset light Infantry (Prince Alberts) on 4016 would have been a contender?

The 'George Jackson Churchward' plates on D1664 / 47079 must have taken some beating length - wise! (OK not steam but it had a steam heat boiler!)

Most Coronation/Duchesses have long names and take up a lot of metal.

Can you better define 'longest'? Is it physical length (feet & inches or metric whatever) or number for letters/characters?
I believe 60835 is generally considered to have the longest name in terms of letters amongst main-line locos: 'The Green Howard, Alexandra, Princess of Wales Own Yorkshire Regiment' No idea about physical length.

If I remember correctly, the A4 nameplate Commonwealth of Australia used to be on display in the old reading room at the NRM prior to Search Engine. It was a two piece nameplate.
    A. Coulls please confirm this.
I would say that the longest casting would be one of the Duchesses. Possibly 46256, the great man himself.
