60th anniversary of Germany's first heritage railway

    From 24 July to 2 August 2026, the German Railway Association celebrated its 60th anniversary in Bruchhausen-Vilsen. The heritage railway from Bruchhausen-Vilsen to Asendorf is also Germany’s first heritage railway. Alongside the association’s three own steam locomotives – Plettenberg, Spreewald and Hoya – the guest steam locomotives Rur from Kleinbaan Service and 86 1744 from the Pressnitztalbahn were also in service.

    In Lower Saxony, on the western side of the IGB. Mind you, DR and the East Berlin U-Bahn were pretty much heritage railways by 1989...

    Wow. It seemed to be well underway when I visited, and that was in the late 1990s! It'll be worth it though, I'm sure.
