A "hard relight " in actuality, simply atomised fuel hitting the firebricks after the fire died, it happens.

 

It’s something I’ve experienced in times past and I believe has happened with 2253.

 

Safe and efficient oil firing where there are no safety devices such as would be found in an industrial application relies heavily on the competency of the fireman. The potential for a blowback is always there. Perhaps this is one reason it is taking so long to get 2253 into regular service.

 

Yes, I can recall this happening on Brussels at the WV back in the 70s

 

As I understand it the NYMR’s plan is to get the Footplate Inspectorate trained upband sufficiently experienced first. They will then start to roll out a training plan for other footplate crew which will start off with classroom training in the new MIC building. The Railway is taking it all very seriously and not simply putting people out with someone experienced for a couple of trips and then signing them off. There are too many potential mishaps to not take it very seriously.

Grease will reduce the co-efficient of friction. Many joints depend on the friction to maintain the connection. Not all joints have fitted bolts or dowels. There are some structural designs that use high strength friction grip (HSFG) bolts to hold components together and in alignment.
