Well done the loco crew and guard

 

I am well aware that things are very subject to change so if you can't answer this, it's fine, but maybe it's possible to answer via deduction based on when washouts/maintenance are planned etc:

We're down in Carmarthenshire in 3.5-4 weeks' time - which locos are currently expected to be potentially in service around then?

I won't be kicking off if the information provided here turns out to be incorrect!!

 

Moorbarrow is currently out for repair so as things stand will either be L150 or Haulwen.

L150 is in use at the moment. Difficult to say right now as loco allocation is being done slightly differently this year rather than the standard 28 day cycle for a washout.

Work continues at Llwyfan Cerrig as an access is being created to Aberaeron Signal Box so that visitors can view the box.

Well done. I must pay you a visit again. The late John Morris, a Gwili volunteer and one of my former team would be well chuffed.

 

He most certainly would be. I've great memories of working with John.

 

Work ongoing on Barry 163. Seats are away at the Bluebell for making, while springs are off for new to be made. Bodywork in various stages of repair.

Taff Vale 220 also in the shed, mainly awaiting the return of door locks from the SVR and some painting.

GWR 216 is at Abergwili awaiting its turn in the shed, new doors to be completed and final beading etc.

TVR 51 and GWR 216 outside in the sunshine today as the shed was shunted.

 

Like the vast majority of railways we have now resorted to diesel haulage. How long the locos will remain in the siding is anyone’s guess right now.

 

Quite right/ I know visitors, AND the staff come to that. will be disappointed but it is still the correct thing to do. Well done for making this decision.

 

If we assume, as many are, that prolonged hot dry spells through summer are going requiring diesel cover are going to be a regular thing in future, has the Gwili given any thought to obtaining a larger diesel than the 03 to support with this going forward? Looking at the website, it seems the 03 is the largest of the current diesel fleet so I can imagine if it was under maintenance, it may be difficult to run services.
(Is the DMU in service? That's always a good option too)

I appreciate there are a LOT of considerations - what skills and resource are available, what storage is available, what your requirements are etc.

 

CHR have a couple of 144 Pacers for sale. . .

 

we have the 2 x 03 locos. At the moment our own 03 is proving to be up to the task, hopefully the second one will be available soon.

 

Have been offered a Pacer previously but had to decline due to a number of issues.
