Ugh I wish I hadn't gone BTL there. A lot of people who make me want to use language that would get me banned from the internet.

What in tarnation does that mean?

 

To red pen something is to underline/mark in your spotter's book with red pen the loco/unit you have been hauled by. Black pen for seen.

So Matt is saying someone's Dad (and I'm guessing his as I believe Matt Senior is a long-time SVR volunteer) has already ridden behind 4150....lucky chap!

4150 is looking fantastic from the videos I've seen (thanks for those who commit to waiting for test trains to bring us the footage), a trip to the Midlands will soon be happening for me.

When someone’s Dad has filled the tums of those responsible for 4150’s return to traffic, can you blame him for a bit of a kickback? Think he’s paid for a couple of rivets on it as well, very much entitled to a little play with his new toy

 

Bad form to reply to the same post twice but, much as I love my old man I’m dreading it when 82045 comes into traffic next year and how excited he’s going to be…

 

Is it next year? Not something I think they’ve put a year on yet?

 

As regards 82045. It's never good form to give a completion date, as there are so many variables and unknowns. She will be ready when she is ready.

It is possible however to say that when the great day eventually arrives, there are already plans afoot to give the 840 plus 82045 members first dibs to ride behind her and celebrate, as a sincere and heartfelt thank you for their magnificant and unwavering support.

 

The owning group must be very pleased by the positive reaction to 4150's return to steam. It would be so easy to say, "Oh, it's just another Large Prairie - ridden behind plenty of them, photographed plenty of them", etc. True, 4150 is the seventh 51xx to be restored (after 4110, 4141, 4144, 4160, 5164 and 5199) and therefore doesn't have the novelty value of some recent returns to steam, such as the T3 at Swanage, GER "Coffee Pot" no. 229 or new builds like 2999, 6880 and 32424, but the owning group has steadily plodded away with its engine over the years and, judging by the videos and pictures, has managed a first-rate job with the help of the regular SVR staff. I think I'm correct in saying that excluding 2999 and 6880, it's only the second ex-Barry restoration to be completed since the Covid pandemic - the other, ironically being another Large Prairie - 4110.

An ideal loco for the SVR which will look great at the head of a rake of GWR coaches. Well done to all concerned.

 

Its more interesting for me because its largely been done under the radar, no reports on progress like the other locos you mentioned just suddenly appearing. What coaching stock it looks right with depends on the livery, hopefully it will be historically correct, either post war GWR or BR black or green.

 

In fairness, the 4150 Fund has issued monthly restoration updates and annual newsletters on their website in the same way as the 82045 Fund does.

It's probably gone under the radar on here because nobody has posted links to them in the same way @gios does with 82045. As a member of both, I could have done the same for 4150 but didn't, so I'll take some of the blame for the low profile. Any way, I'm glad to see 4150 out and about, and looking forward to red penning it.

With another of my hats on, work is progressing slowly on 5164 at Tyseley (and Kent) so hopefully not too many years until we have another Large Prairie back on the Valley.

 

Someone promised us a Grange a few years ago, then got narky when pulled up about it when it turned out to be an outside cylinder pannier tank… Aitch I might have my dates wrong and that’s fair enough, its Just from what I’ve been led to believe, if it’s BS then ok. Can only go on with what I’m told though.

 

Matt. The message is simply that a completion date is impossible to give as there are so many variables and unknowns. Be sure completion gets closer every week. Keep the faith!
