Yes, the more I looked at it, the more I wondered. Do you mask up the linkeages or just assume the fireman is stronger than any paint bond?

I do like to see the details of the correctly oriented screw heads with the slots nicely lined up! Both on the cab number plate and the splasher beading....impressive.

I haven't followed the overhaul to any degree so don't know to what extent the loco was stripped - but surely with parts like that, you take them off to refurbish, and paint them to top coat before final fitting; that also then gives you unfettered access to the plate work behind.

See, that annoys me, as it means someone has tightened the screws so they line up, not so they are at the correct torque (whether measured by feel or torque-wrench).

Not being funny but with the cabside plates it’s hardly difficult to get them lined up properly. Posh screw head style bolt in, line it up how you want it, then put the nut on the back and tighten it from the nut as tight as you like!

And not that difficult with the screws on the splashes either to get right.

No. It means that someone has held the head of the countersunk screw stationary with the slot in the head at the angle they desired whilst their assistant has tightened the nut on the inside to the required torque.

On most GWR cast cab side number plates the screws did not have slots and were retained from turning by a peg in the screw engaging in a slot in the number plate. However this does not appear universal as some original number plates do not have the slots.

Edit: Harry beat me to it whilst I was typing

    Andy.

Looks as though the cylinder lining is a bit suspect.

Despite the criticisms I shall be very pleased to see and hear KEI pounding it's way to the west country or t0 the Welsh Marches. <BJ>

The livery is wrong for a double chimney King so that doesn’t matter
