Gresley's 150th anniversary has been celebrated in Doncaster this morning with an Azuma suitably emblazoned.

It's fitting that the Teaks may yet return to service to celebrate the anniversary year.

A little late, shots from last weekends diesel event, posting here as I can't see another thread under galas. I would have to agree with the livery comments on the class 14, looked like it was undercoat from what they could find in the garage. Still, they put the hours in and hands down in their pockets, so their choice. Really does look grim. As I understand things, if you volunteer on any heritage railway you are covered under the railways employees liability insurance provided that the insurance does include volunteers, which is the norm. You don't have to be a member of any organisation. Happy to be told that's not the case by any learned gentleman or woman.

Correct Steve so long as it’s on the railway’s premises. So if the affiliated group occupies its own sites it would need to insure those volunteering there.

I totally understand your viewpoint, and mine, of course is from my own selfish viewpoint as I benefit from the 'locals' discount.

But I guess it is a double edged sword - if there was no membership I would most likely do just one but maybe a maximum of 2 day rover trips per year at a cost of just less than £50/£100, whereas now I have paid £100 for multiple trips where it is guaranteed I will spend money of refreshments, and quite often perhaps out of loyalty because of the good value I am getting (if that makes sense.) For example at Pickering I would rather buy a coffee, sandwich (which are very good) and snacks from the station cafe rather than Co-op or Costa. And the profit margin on such items are very high. Also note I generally would only use the line in off season or quieter services (for personal reasons) so therefore am not taking someone elses seat. That last service from Pickering is always gloriously sparsely popualted.

I am lead to believe uptake on the membership has been high which is why I am yet to receive my card in the post after nearly 3 weeks.

Sorry, but I can’t see how the railway is guaranteed anything-you have no obligation to buy anything from the railway and the railway cannot depend on you buying anything.

Or the membership process is a mess…

I've just renewed my membership on line and it tells me my card will be sent within 2 weeks.
However, @Sidmouth4me of this forum is now the membership secretary and I believe is on the case. It would be good if he could tell us how the membership is doing.

He's note responding to e-mails though - I sent him a message explaining why I would not, after more than 50 years, be renewing my membership and didn't get so much as an acknowledgement. As far as I can tell I'm not the only one who feels this way, but presumably revealing that membership numbers are falling away is not something the SMT is happy to reveal without coming up with some plausible spin first.

    This getting getting tedious.

No organisation is required to publish its membership figures, whether they're going up or down.

Not what you've decided not to renew your membership, does that mean that you'll also reduce your constant criticism of *everything* the NYMR does? Time to move on, perhaps, and find a different railway to join?

You're making your "business" and opinions very public in this forum. So you need to accept that there are some/many who have different views. Not just try to silence them.

Great photos, I wish I could have attended! Re the Class 14 livery, this was proposed by designer John Barnes of Allen-Bowden industrial designers.. The shades are Mustard, Congo Brown & Gossamer from the British Standard 2660 range.

37s ruling the roost today with only 44806 on the long Whitby turn, assume Firecon timetable will be incoming this week.

Is this a historically-proposed thing, or a new one?
IMO, it looks as if he put a lot of thought into the bonnets and chassis etc, then did the cab in 5 minutes - it breaks up the outline, and (on photos at least) then loses it against a pale sky.
I'd just paint the cab the same as the rest of the body work, perhaps with a panel in a different colour around the windows.

Omaha is out, passed her at Levisham while I was on the black 5.

I had a feeling that may be the case despite the loco roster saying otherwise. I am surprised the 9F isn’t out.

A few musings from my outing on the line today, which may be the last for a few weeks as I am away:

*Loadings were again impressive for the steam services. Even the 37 service looked about half full on load 5.

*It was a nice surprise to see Omaha out running unassisted, she wasn’t on the roster.

*The journey seems very stop start and at times sluggish, particularly between Levisham and Goathland which is a shame.

*9f and number 29 not out and stabled outside loco shed.

I believe that there was a problem with the 9F. Out tomorrow?

This was the livery proposed for the D95XX locos prior to construction, source ‘British Rail Designed’ by David Lawrence. There seems to have been a plethora of alternative paint schemes proposed for forthcoming diesel types to get away from the standard BR Deep Bronze Green. When views against the original livery of Brush ‘Falcon’ prototype, the Class 14 proposal was not that far out. To me, the livery could easily be a contemporary paint style on an American mainline diesel.
