Wasn't this a one off for Bernard Staite's birthday train? Not sure she did anything else at a higher speed.

Not really. The weights were within plates riveted over a set number of spokes and then the lead-antimony weight poured in to a pre-determined weight. The number of spokes covered did not change to suit the amount of lead added.

I often wonder why the 4 Scottish Regiment named Black fives 45154/6/7/8 were transferred from 65B St Rollox to 26A Newton heath .Maybe it was to remove all the domeles boiler locos from Scotland. But then there were plenty of others to choose from including 45155.A swap round of 5Xs was done in the early 1950s ,throat plate fireboxes for slopping .Rare machines from Perth ,Kingmore and Polmadie were sent to the Midland ,common as muck Kentish Town /Nottingham etc were sent North, much to the enjoyment of spotters.45156 was borrowed to work Midland locals ,theY manage to run it hot .Photted at 15A Wellingborogh shed with the centre wheels out on 8/4/1959.

An odd quirk, this being the 10A thread, is that the 3 5s now under WC ownership each have different boiler configurations.

Stephensons is arguably a better valve gear than Walschaerts in terms of valve events. Its downfall is fitting it outside of the wheel which is where you want your valve gear for ease of maintenance. The challenge Ivatt gave to the DO was to do just that and stay within the loading gauge. How many other locos with outside Stephenson’s were there?

I’ll rephrase the question: How many successful locos with outside Stephensons valve gear were there?:)

Very interesting, thanks. In answer to your question, ironically enough I took this photo earlier today. I’m not sure what you’d call it - not really inside or outside stephensons. Porch-Stephensons?

Outside link motion was common among 19th-Century locos in Continental Europe - although sometimes of the Gooch or Allan variants of Stephenson gear.

That’s definitely a conventional inside link Stephensons gear as it’s on the axle. The fact it’s outside the frames is not relevant. James Cross/Borrows seemingly liked this arrangement. I’ve not come across it elsewhere but that doesn’t mean to say thee are no other examples. ‘Willy’ is a Kerr Stuart version of the Cross design.

The Bernard State train was 2005, February. Super run but don't recollect the speed.

I think what was alluded to earlier in this thread were the planned Torbay Expresses, backed by Pete Waterman with 7802, of which just the one run occurred. As best as memory allows the timings were in the WTT and in TRUST kept getting put off, then never started.

To add to my posts, where you have a well tank the options become quite limited. The Cross arrangement was an acceptable means of avoiding an outside valve gear. Even where there is room within the loading gauge the alignment of the Stephenson’s gear essentially puts the valve centreline towards the outside of the cylinder whereas, ideally, you want it on the inner side of the cylinder or, at least, on top so that it conveniently lies between the steam pipe and the cylinder. That’s quite easy with inside valve gears.

Going back to loco's that are at 10A I suppose the other pretty big unknown is when Lizzie will be finished as she would happily fill the massive 8p Air braked hole?

I think you must know West Coast never give any updates on progress and given the speculation that would result I don’t blame them.

Oh totally, and recent events with 45110 also illustrate that they still have the ability to completely shock everyone....

TBH what prompted/reminded me of her is a post on Facebook from the 6201 Society advertising a deal for new memberships for Fathers Day suggesting that they have a quarterly journal which I assume they do use to update members of progress outside the WCR bubble?

Maybe join to find out the information you seek?
On the other hand if, as speculated, Mr Smith is subsidising the overhaul costs the Society might not be permitted to go into too much detail out of respect to the sponsor's wishes?
