Yes, but we’d also put a liquid nitrogen trap in the circuit between pump and vacuum line to prevent the pump oil absorbing volatiles and reducing the efficiency, and I’d like to see the Swindon drawing for that!

As long as they don't condense oxygen ;)
(Something I have never done and raises an eyebrow when someone says they have)

I always managed to avoid that one in several years of standing by a Schlenk line!

It is labelled both Air Pump and Vacuum Pump.

I suppose it could be called the "Vacuum Maintaing Air Pump" :)

But what really matters is, why does it squeak?
Is that a fault, or is it an indication of a good seal around the piston?

I’m not going to comment on the cause of the squeak in case it leads to another forty posts!!!

I was an engineer in the chemical industry all my working life and firstly for our sins they were always referred to as vacuum pumps, be they recip, liquid ring or whatever.
However, in design and specification, we always used absolute pressure whatever kind of ‘pump’ we were specifying. This annoyed the factory staff who were forever asking how ‘strong’ a vacuum that was.

Equally they would use the most inappropriate names for key items of plant.
I was once dispatched 140 miles to N Wales to investigate a serious pump problem that was causing production shutdowns. On arrival I was directed to the factory engineer’s lair to be briefed. It went something along these lines …..

“Hello boyo, so you’ve been sent to wave your magic wand at the drum pump ‘ave you?”
“Drum pump, you’ve dragged me all this way to look at a drum pump? How on earth is dispensing from a drum causing the production line to grind to a halt?”
“Drums? What are you talking about? You boffins really are dim, it’s the Drum Pump isn’t it?” He reply exasperatedly.
“I’m sorry, I really don’t understand, what does this pump do if it’s not emptying drums?”
“Look you, it’s the main supply pump to the fibre spinning machines, bloody great lump of a thing with a 100HP motor, makes a heck of a din, you must know it!”
“Ah, you mean the 1st stage polymer pressurisation pump?
    “What?”
“So why do you call it a Drum Pump ??”
    .
    .
    .
“Because it’s made by Drum Ltd”
    :Banghead:

Plenty more where that came from, especially involving our cousins across the water …..

The LMS certainly referred to them as vacuum pumps. See for example Job 5088, 18 August 1938 Removal of vacuum pumps from Standard locomotives.

I also used vacuum pumps at work, referred to as such...

GWR No. 6024 King Edward I to Visit the NVR
We are delighted to announce that GWR No. 6024 King Edward I will be visiting the NVR over the weekend of 10–11 October.

This will be the first King Class locomotive to operate over the former LNWR route on the NVR. In addition to hauling passenger services on Saturday 10 October, the King will also haul our popular Jolly Fisherman Train, The Cornish Riviera Express, on Saturday evening. Passenger services will continue to operate on Sunday 11 October.

The locomotive's visit is made possible through the generous support of the Royal Scot Locomotive & General Trust, to whom we extend our grateful thanks.

Tickets will go on sale on Thursday 11 June.
