Having seen the recently published annual accounts for Crewe Heritage Centre's 2024-2025 year it is obvious that since the changes in both management and trustees in late 2023/early 2024 there has been a severe downturn in its income and expenditure accounts. After 5 consecutive years with a 6 figure turnover, income dropped from £157,702 (2023-24) to £97250 (2024-2025) whilst expenditure went from £190431 (2023-24) to £234630 (2024-25). Shop revenue (one of its main income sources) went from £58682 (2023-24) down to £8682 (2024-25), Catering revenue went from £20224 (2023-24) down to £16478 (2024-25) with only admissions showing an increase from £31222 (2023-24) to £35512 (2024-25). As a result the Centre showed the highest loss since it was set up in the early 1990s going from a loss of £32729 (2023-24) to a loss of £137380 (2024-25).
In the year of the Rail 200 celebrations two of the Centre's largest railway related exhibits on loan from the National Railway Museum (The LNWR Cab from the locomotive 'Columbine' and the original cylinders display from the locomotive 71000 'Duke of Gloucester') were completely hidden from display to visitors, and remain so in 2026 and its North Junction signal box was closed to visitors and volunteers due to health and safety concerns and will be the same in 2026. The increase in visitor numbers is as a result of families having free admission on Wednesdays during the local schools term holidays, with a noticeable decline in weekend visitors, especially with the decline in special events which were a regular feature at various weekends during the Centre's season (April to October). The transfer of the shop and cafe from the North Junction signal box to the main exhibition hall has also resulted in reduced display space and the opportunity to stage larger events such as model railway exhibitions, auctions, toy fairs etc. Its supporters magazine 'The Eagle' which previously appeared twice a year has seen just one issue since 2024. Judging by the number of appeals on its Facebook page it is also suffering from a lack of volunteers like other volunteer run museums and charities. It will be interesting to see what the 2025-26 accounts show and wether the six figure income can be once more attained and the loss turned into a profit.

Yes I am an active volunteer
You only have to look at the top to find out why organisations struggle, what worked before and what didn't work afterward is what you need to look at.

Are thr management paid or are they volunteers themselves? there's your problem.

There are now two full time paid staff, a manager and her assistant plus a paid part time staff member. All Trustees and other staff are volunteers.
