Railways and a lot of people. The heritage railway movement has come a long way since I took this picture at Haworth in April 1967. Unfortunately so have the health and safety busy bodies.

In a more deferential age a PW gang stand to attention as the Royal Train passes by. A bulled up 47557 passes Chaloners Whin Junction just south of York on 12/11/1981. The then ECML swings off to the left through what is now a Tesco Retail store.

From memory the up train was late, hence the "audience" for the Duchess that was on the rear of the train.

 

A bit of what is now "old school" railway working - the driver of 37017 is talking to the box on the SPT (signal post telephone) having been stood at the signal at Bootham outside York station for a few minutes - no radio communication back then on a busy summer Saturday in 1983

As mentioned on the 'Fire Risk and Extreme Heat - Heritage Lines' thread, 7714 was having injector problems last weekend due to the heat.

 

I went to Knebworth House a few years ago when they still had the miniature railway running in the grounds, and they brought out their steam loco for the annual evening BBQ. It was rather warm and the injectors packed up when the loco was halfway round the circuit. The only cold liquid available was the cans of beer the passengers were drinking, so several litres of lager got poured over the injectors to cool them down enough to get the loco back to the station!
