They've got the idea from the NYMR, and the opportunity that was being offered in return for sponsorship of 75029's overhaul..... Except, the NYMR was apparently being serious.

I'm reliably told by a friend in the area that the King is out on a turning manoeuvre at the moment, and is booked on a Chester test run tomorrow.

It was (is) not unusual to hear a squeak from GW loco’s, invariably coming from the vacuum pump..

Being pedantic, it is an air pump as that is what is being pumped and that is how it is referred to. You can't pump a vacuum. :)

But as the air being pumped creates the vacuum, invariably referred to as a vacuum pump.

Invariably, perhaps, but done so in ignorance and totally incorrectly. The GWR always referred to it as an air pump.

Indeed so. I have in front of me a copy of a GWR official publication 'The "King" of Railway Locomotives' and there is a chapter devoted to the construction. At one point it reads:

Many parts are now added with a view to wheeling the engine. The axle boxes are fitted in the horns and bedded on the axles; eccentric sheaves and straps are secured in position, and pistons, valves, crossheads , and air pump assembled.
That was in a book written for a general rather than a technical audience, but clearly that is how the railway referred to the pump, even though the purpose was to evacuate (rather than pressurise) the braking system.

Caustic but painfully true. They're particularly poor when it comes to radio and electronics and also to some aspects of aviation.

always good to see the spirit of goodwill to fellow human beings is in full effect on Nat Pres .....

Whether right or wrong it has always been a crosshead vacuum pump to me , an air pump is a westinghouse

Martin, I was drawing attention to the colloquialism to which you refer is shared by the SM, not expressing any ill-will to "fellow humans" .....
However, as a point of principle the function of the Science Museum ought to properly reflect both the common parlance and the technically correct description. Hope that opinion isn't displaying a lack of goodwill ....

I have no animosity towards anyone but it is a fact that the Science Museum Group is managed by a team woefully lacking in science or engineering qualifications.

The squeak has always been there but is louder now than before. I've never heard a king squeak that loud from the vacuum pump

loco's of the royal road as published by the GWR does not mention air pump, unless I am missing something it doesn't reference it at all . Given reference to the "King" is there any chance your reference is about 6000 and its US tour

every publication I have refers to a crosshead vacuum pump . the LMS handbook for enginemen refers to a vacuum ejector so in terms of naming is it not about what is created which is a Vacuum
