Indeed, a couple of ironic points in that 76079 was a loco bought by the NYMR, not as a result of direct benefaction. Now it is being sold to a railway which has received a substantial donation to be able to afford to take on a significantly expensive project.

I'd be surprised if Network Rail would allow them. Its got particularly tight corners on that section for 8 driving wheels. I'm also not aware of either class having been allowed on the mainline in recent memory.

D5032 has followed the usual NYMR trend of being stripped for overhaul than progress has been glacial. I believe the plan was D5061 would go in for overhaul once D5032 was complete. D5061 was withdrawn in 2014, and D5032 had already been under overhaul for a couple of years by that point.

Don't forget D7541/25191. Another NYMR loco, used until it broke, then dumped and sold to HNRC.

S160s have a comparatively short wheelbase for an 8 coupled loco I think, plus a bogie tender is an asset running backwards.

A post on socials this morning advising the NYMR is committing to having a Teak set back in service for the autumn steam gala.

Wonder how many people will find a reason to moan about this?

EDIT: posted same time as above.

I can remember 2857 doing so but it depends how you define recent memory.

My reaction to the post by @black5 was that "at last" there is good news on this front. But I'm not going to give praise for fixing a situation that should never have arisen.

That makes a good case for that engine. Though IIRC its only got 3 years left on its ticket, and isn't NYMR owned. Not that any of that rules it out, but they did make an April Fools story of 2253 being mainline registered so I suspect it isn't on the agenda for now at least. It would potentially be a prospect for sorting out during its upcoming overhaul, but I think there will be hoops to jump through with NR with there being no other S160 on the mainline at the minute, so no 'recent' precedent.

It was 1985 and I was two - definitely not something I remember! 48151 has been to Whitby in more recent years. Whether you'd want to use an 8 coupled loco to Whitby on a regular basis is another matter.

Agreed. Can't wait to see them back. This years 'theme' is the NELPG anniversary as well is it not? Would love to travel on them behind the K1!

An S160 would "simply" have to be demonstrably compliant with relevant standards applicable to operating on the Whitby section, like any other NYMR loco used for that route.
Not saying it would be cheap but there's probably a decent business case for a dual braked, oil fired loco.

At one stage there was a suggestion of one of the Cheddleton based S160s possibly obtaining approval for the mainline.

Wild suggestion, but 3 oil fired S160s might go quite well for a Jacobite operation. Each in different colours.
A sort of Harry Potter meets Polar Express thing, be popular with American tourists.

I think it would require a nut and bolt assessment. It has spent time in Poland and I've heard some tales of what they did to keep them in service. Not sure now if it is 2253 but I've seen one with a left side coupling rod on the right, simply turned upside down and a new oilpot welded on.

NELPG News 352 mentions a NELPG Diamond Jubilee gala on the 24/25 October with all four group locos as a separate event. Yet to be confirmed on NYMR website, fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

..and NELPG Q6 certainly was on mainline during 1975, as an 8 coupled engine! Albeit not one of the 2 you mention.

I think it's a combination of factors: a cash-strapped, but cash-hungry, management (they've reportedly just added a new member to the "commercial team", though what for is anyone's guess -there doesn't seem to be much commercial activity going on. Perhaps its someone with experience of receivership?

It's be interesting to see what the next family silver to go will be, I can't see this being the last.
Will the NYMR make any money from it, though? There was a time, admittedly under a more enlightened manage. a long while ago, when it was suggested that supporting groups could hire the railway and stage their own gala. The railway got a hire fee, the staging group pocketed any profits over and above that. It never happened because no group was in a position to achieve it at that time, but now perhaps NELPG and the LNERCA could combine to get there?

Now if only we still had that superb GN Saloon to go with it - it looks an absolute treat serving up market cream teas on another railway now, but that would seem to be a railway with the vision that is sadly lacking on the NYMR these days.
