GUEST ANNOUNCEMENT: A CLASH OF GIANTS! [IMG]
We are thrilled to announce that the legendary BR Standard Class 9F No. 92134 will be joining us for the 2026 Giants of Steam gala!
This heavy-freight icon won’t be alone—it will be appearing alongside the unique BR Class 8P No. 71000 'Duke of Gloucester'. Together, they represent the absolute pinnacle of British Railways standard design—one built for raw, unyielding power, and the other for ultimate express speed.
Witnessing these two "Giants" together on our line will be a highlight of the decade for enthusiasts and families alike. Don't miss your chance to see over 300 tons of Crewe-built history in action!
    A Special Thank You
This landmark appearance is made possible through the incredible generosity of the Self Family and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). We are deeply grateful for their support in allowing 92134 to take part in this spectacular weekend.

A very useful loco to join the Bluebell fleet. <BJ>

I will just float the possibility that not all of those engines may run every day of the gala. They will all get a good run, though. I don't know further details at present.

I guess because the theme is really about BR standards (and closely-related designs like the Ivatt).

Apart from cost, there is an impact of increasing the number of locos, which is each one gets used less - and people complain about that! Four trains with four locos essentially maxes out the line capacity - beyond that you either start having locos sitting around for long periods, or lots of double heading, neither of which are universally popular.

A few different reasons - as Tom has said above, the gala is themed around BR Standards and related designs. 6 engines is already quite a few, and will mean there’s a number of double headers and/or top n tailed services. Adding a seventh engine would not be feasible, and in my view there’s not a homefleet engine I’d substitute for Beachy Head.

Beachy Head is also a less powerful engine than the three homefleet running for the gala, having a load limit of 200 tons. This is below the weight of a 6 coach Mk1 set which are (depending on which vehicles are used) normally around 220 tons. 41313 is also restricted to 185 tons, and having 2 engines which cannot haul two or three out of four sets is a timetabling nightmare.

Also to add re: no Beachy Head

32424, despite missing the Spring Steam Gala this year. has been central to quite a few galas since it was launched the new build themed Giants last year, the Branch Line Gala, 65th Anniversary, and its own Launch event and the 2024 Giants in addition to taking a starring role at Didcot's event back in May.

I personally wouldn't want to see 32424 being used at the expense of dropping a couple of trips from either of the three visitors.

There was a "Giants of Steam" event on the Bluebell a few years ago when the largest loco was a class 5. Another railway had a normal steam gala the same weekend with no claims of "Giants", but the smallest loco was a class 5.

For an event such as Giants of Steam, where the focus is on large engines which deserve full line services, there is simply no justification for running seven locomotives. There are four sets for Giants of Steam, so you only really need four locos to run the service, as successfully happened last year. I am surprised that there are as many as six this year. This means that for every train there are 1.5 engines available to haul it. This will result in lots of 'fun' when it comes to timetabling. If you had seven engines, up to 3 out of every 4 trains would have multiple engines. Is there any point in running an engine which never even hauls a train solo?

The timetable for GoS 2026 is going to be incredible, and I can confidently say there is no need for Beachy Head (to clog up platform 2 dock at SP offering footplate visits for several hours because there are no more services available for it to haul).

Sorry that this message has come out rather bluntly, but I just wanted to further outline why it is unrealistic to hope for Beachy Head to be in operation.
