So this para on their website is obsolete?

“Since the acquisition of Seal Engineering (now CTL Seal) in 2009, our operation also includes the design and manufacture of bespoke fabrications, structural steelwork, heavy precision machining, lifting equipment and general engineering.”

Charles Thompson Ltd and CTL Seal were linked 5 years ago but are now completely separate companies. They are working together on our boiler project. Their web site does need updating

Another 'wheely' big step forward this week! Hengist will be rolling before much longer. Well done to all involved, and I mean ALL.
You all know the link by now, surely.

Cannon axleboxes are on order for the coupled wheels as well. We have 2D drawings for the internal components, we now need to fit them into the 3D model and do a tolerance check. Once the axleboxes have been cast and proof machined, they will come back to Diamond Engineering for the Manganese Steel Liners to be welded on and final machined.

Senior Engineer / Railway Engineering Lead (Voluntary Role)

The Standard Steam Locomotive Company, a registered charity, is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Engineer / Railway Engineer to help lead the exciting new-build project for the missing BR Standard Class 6 locomotive, 72010 Hengist.

This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role in one of the most significant heritage railway engineering projects in the UK and help create a lasting legacy within the preservation movement.

This is an engineering led project and you will be working alongside a dedicated team of engineers, suppliers, and volunteers at the Hengist Works based within Diamond Group, Sheffield; the successful candidate will help drive the project forward through its next stages of construction. We hope this individual will eventually take on a wider leadership role within the organisation, including becoming a Director and joining the Council of Management.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Supporting and leading engineering activities across the project
    • Approval of specifications and drawings
    • To work to the requirements of the railway industry for the safe operation, certification and registration of new build rail vehicles.
    • Coordinating with suppliers, contractors and volunteers
    • Helping deliver work to agreed timelines and project plans
    • Contributing practical engineering solutions and problem-solving
    • Taking a hands-on approach within the works environment
    • Supporting the long-term strategic development of the project
    About You

    • Strong engineering background
      • Experience of the process for design, procurement and manufacture of parts
      • Understanding of the use of 21st century engineering techniques (CAD, FEA, FMEA,etc)
    • Knowledge of steam locomotives, railways or heavy engineering is desirable, but not essential
    • Willingness to learn
    • Organised and able to work to plans and deadlines
    • Positive attitude with a flexible and proactive approach
    • Strong practical and problem-solving skills
    • Enthusiastic about heritage engineering and teamwork
    The Role

This is a demanding voluntary position offering the rare chance to help build a brand-new steam locomotive requiring commitment and passion that will leave a genuine legacy within the heritage railway movement.

If you would like to learn more about the role, please email us at info@72010-hengist.org to arrange an informal discussion ahead of application.

Be careful with the welding - that's what ruined the P2's pony truck casting.

Welding is Diamond Engineerings expertise and they have weld procedures for manganese steel. It's a very similar job to the bogie where manganese liners were welded onto the axleboxes and onto the liners for the axlebox guides

I like the latest item of 'News', if anyone tells Mike off for laying down on the job I am sure he will confirm that he did not sleep at all.

Quite a tricky situation to be working in, well done Mike!
