Yes, it is mono sound. My right earpiece is fine but the left is quiet.
There is no rule which says you cannot be a member of both, they are not rivals at all!

    Terribly terribly sad.

I’ve known Geoff from our days at Peak Rail in the 70s & 80s. A lovely chap and an extremely able mechanical engineer. He would have been a great asset to any new build project and he was totally invaluable in resurrecting Hengist and turning it into the thoroughly professional build we have the pleasure of seeing today.

The fact that Geoff, like David Elliott with the P2, will be robbed of his finest hour, is so very unjust.

Hengist will live on, thanks to the quality of the team he has helped to build and led so courageously of late and we owe it to Geoff to give the project our full support and ensure it becomes his lasting legacy.

You are quite right! The two project teams work very well together and help each other as appropriate. This was shown right from the beginning when the Hengist gents helped the B17 team lay the track panels for their tenders, as attached photo. Hengist will likely be finished first of the two but IT IS NOT A RACE! Both locomotives will be carefully and methodically assembled to ensure there are no subsequent problems.

The Hengist lads have kindly asked the Toddington standard group if they’ll bring a stand to the open day which we have accepted. All being well we’ll have a few shiny bits of our own on display that you can see and touch. We’ve collaborated with Hengist on patterns in the past (as part of the br std loco owners group) and so, only too happy to add to the event.

It is with great sadness that the Standard Steam Locomotive Company have to announce the death of Geoff Turner, our Engineering Director. Geoff passed away on Saturday 28 March 2026. Geoff was a key member of the team that reorganised the company in 2011 and created the foundations for our organisation. Geoff was instrumental in forming the successful relationship between SSLC and CTL Seal/Diamond Group. Geoff will be sorely missed by his family and colleagues.

How sad that he has gone before the Open Day when he could have said goodbye to many of us in person. It would be good to acknowledge him on the day in some way. We need to ensure that all his work and effort has not been in vain and get this engine on the tracks sooner rather than later. RIP Geoff.
I appreciate the notice but definitely didn't want to see it so cannot like it.

Such tragic news. I was hoping to see Geoff for one last time at the Open Day in Sheffield on April 10th, but sadly it wasn’t to be. We go back a long way, to the early days of Peak Rail in the 80s in fact. A true gentleman and professional, the loco will be his fitting memorial, so the least we can do is to contribute to its completion ……

If you have not yet visited the works, come along on this Saturday 11th after 10.00 and you will see a locomotive/engineering workshop full of folk, displays, and 2 mainline engines in the process of being built. It only costs £3 for non-members, it has cost members a lot more!

What will they have to show us this time??

By some measure the most impressive locomotive erection facility in the country.

Great turn out for the Clan Hengist / B17 Sandringham open day yesterday, car parks full to overflowing.
Lots more stands there too, inc George V, Gowrie, GCR gap viaduct model, and Advanced Steam’s 10.25in Revolution which showcased some really innovative ideas.

Thanks for the pictures, @Sheff. I would have loved to have gone yesterday but three 12 hour shifts immediately prior, all finishing well after midnight with a long drive home after each left me too knackered to visit...

An excellent turn out indeed Sheff. All who managed to get down to the locomotives would have been impressed to see Hengist c/w cab in situ, albeit not fastened to the boiler yet. Though progress is happening on that front as well now! B17 group had a lot more to show than last year, everyone appreciates the wonderful facilities they have at Diamond Group. Geoff will always be remembered for achieving that major leap in the progress for Hengist, and B17 now.
All the other stall holders I spoke to were having a busy day and hoping that enquiries turn into members. Certainly good publicity for them all.
Lots of children with attendant mothers as well as the usual gathering of elderly gentlemen, so hope for the future as well.

    Nice to see you John.
Must have missed the news earlier that Hengist is in consultation/design/construction talks with a boiler supplier... the name has already left my memory if anyone would care to remind me.

Thanks Ian, I had no idea where the CTL name came from. Are they still the parent company of the Diamond Group?
