Think you will find 3985 is oil fired -- hence there is no need to have so much black smoke -- --just ease back on the oil valve & adjust the atomiser as needed....
But hey it makes for a great show all that black smoke, so what the heck --- crank her up !!!

A steam thread I know, but can I sneak in some shocking modern(ish) diesel clag ? There is many a steam loco that never produces anything as much as this !

Fair play to gronkstergronk for filming it !

The first 3985 clip was taken when she was still a coal burner, though I have only rarley found clips of this loco not making loads of smoke. I think she must be hard to keep hot. The UP tried oil on the Bigboys in the 50's and gave up, presumable the slightly larger grate is just too much for the conventional trough burner they use.

S160's are not large enough to have mechanical stokers. The US law was that the grate had to be 50 sq feet or larger to make them mandatory, or the engine weight was over a certain tonnage.

If your looking for smokey find some pictures of Merddin Emrys running in 2007 on Polish coal, the smoke boxes leaked and the drafting was not very well. With Polish coal, certainlt what we used on the FR, show it any flame and the Red Indians are coming!

That has to be cheating, divide the amount of clag by 5 and choose the engine you want to enter \:D/

Yes it is oil fired now, I forgot. Mind you a few years ago it developed problems with the burners and it left a pall of black smoke for miles. Some mates of mine were chasing it and they plenty of warning it was coming. A jet black cloud getting closer and closer.

If I could find away to get some of my old video material, (U Matic High Band), onto you tube I can think of a few Kimberley to De Aar winter sequences that would re write the standards in this thread!

Here is the mighty 5197 with 92203 putting on the clag at the excellent Cranmore 150 Event last year:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv47OlVN8XU

And here is a picture I took just before they set off:[attachment=0:14bkvgjr]usa+bp.JPG[/attachment:14bkvgjr]

And surely this effort from 60163 counts?:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lSlAkiQDxc&feature=related

This will probably get me into trouble, but that effort by Tornado is nothing to be proud of, if they haven't, then someone should be repremanded for that.

You are probably right with what you say Ralph, but I rather enjoyed watching that clip!

And maybe, just maybe, that was just the only time during Tornado's short career that a layer of total slack and coal dust worked it's way down through the tender, leaving the dedicated, highly professional and hard working fireman with nothing to do except get rid of it quickly. Onto the fire!

(EErrrrrr. Probably get into trouble myself now for daring to suggest anything but the very best coal ever goes into that loco's tender.)

...... each piece lovingly hand selected by pristine white glove wearing Hawaiian maidens, weighed, dusted, pre-warmed and placed in an exactly symmetrical stack on the green baize lined coal space ...... \:D/

Just a personal choice. I agree with the whole process you suggest bar one thing.

Could we please replace the Hawaiian maidens with Bavarian Serving Wenches wearing dirndls? \:D/

(Anyone here not know what a dirndl is, GOOGLE Image search for "dirndl beer girl" (it should be work safe), and then you will see why my interest in German steam is so strong).
