I've had a go in it too. It had a rocking, rolling motion.
I even had a driving lesson in it, albeit while stationary at Rolvenden.
There was a roneoed instruction pamphlet for it. I might still have that somewhere...

I am told that I, too, have travelled on it, but I was too young to remember. Again, Boris was the driver on that occasion, and my dad had known Boris in their respective youths.

The railcar was used as hauled stock on a number of occasions before it's final withdrawal.

Better get myself to the KESR sooner rather than later then.

    That looks very blue-ish.

    Is this better?

It still seeems to have its original passengers on board... :)

Not passengers! Was a meeting of Association of Railway Preservation Societies committee, the predecessor of the Heritage Railway Association, which was held inside Railcar No 20 at Rolvenden on the 23rd April 1966. That on the very same day No 20 had been hauled up to Rolvenden in a steam hauled stock move from Robertsbridge Junction Station were it had been parked following delivery to K&ESR by BR a few weeks earlier. Here is an account of that day including the ARPS meeting in the GWR railcar at Tenterden. After the meeting the delegates were treated to a rare Tenterden-Robertsbridge return trip behind a Terrier, where they saw the H-class tank in storage and the P-class still in industrial service.

KESR should outshop W20W in that livery - it's so wrong it's just right!

<livery froth> I always thought carmine/cream and lined green suited the 'angular' GW railcars far better than GWR livery. My vote would be to paint it half c/c and half green, just to irritate the livery 'purists' :D </livery froth>

Despite living a very long way from my KESR territory roots, I'll be very tempted to pay a visit for a ride in the railcar once it's finished, whatever colour it is.

Chuck in 21 and 22 in their Ashford Works identities and I'd die a very happy ex-southerner ;)

That report says that there is a 'glut' of Terriers .

There are 10 of the things preserved, all somehow contriving to look different so we can tell them apart. Is this the largest number of survivors for a pre-grouping class?

Probably also the largest proportion - there were only 50 built, so that's a 20% survival rate.

Also I believe the largest proportion of preserved locomotives from a single standard-gauge pre-grouping company - W8 represents 50% of the FYNR's loco stock...

Not the largest proportion - I think the Wainwright P class takes that honour (4 of 8 preserved, so 50%).

I think the Terriers must be the largest number of survivors in absolute terms from a single pre-grouping class - I can’t think of anything that has more.

6 GWR 28xx were preserved. Though 2874 is frames mostly.

    A KESR preservation history question:

    Resize.jpg

I'm scanning my photographs from the early days of the K&ESR, and the caption to this one says: BSK S 34626 cut down to underframe for GNR body. This was on 15.09.1977. The body in question, in to halves, is in the background.
Anyone know what happened to it?

BTW, the woodwork in the foreground is Witt Rd signal box ( in case it's not obvious :))

I think I recall seeing that once, but never again, after the GNR body was plonked onto the Mk1 frame.
