31128 also gone home to Burton for maintenance ,by road .
Previous returns were by rail ,but that wouldn’t have been an option this time ,unless it had accompanied 60103 pre the bridge inspection .

If trains only run to Goathland and on the assumption a point isn’t purchased /installed to reinstate the loop all trains will have to be top and tail as at Christmas …more costs and maintenance…

You mean, like the Beeching cuts? Been there, etc. Unless you meant 'change it from a fundamentally transport business to a fundamentally entertainment business'.

A former chairman, known for his utterances on legal matters on this forum, is known to be both an admirer of the Torbay and Jacobite's business models, and also as a regarder of members as a cash drain, rather than as a resource. It's not in the least fanciful to believe that he'd like to see the NTYMR resculpted along those lines.

Sorry if not up to speed.

But if bridge repairs run on, could trains not operate Pickering to Goathland. Is there no ability to run round at Goathland at the moment?

I write only as a member and long time lapsed volunteer (moving house meant helping at the nymr was no longer practical). What is going on with the bridge at Grosmont? The only thing I have seen in the public domain is that it requires work and until that is complete no services can run.

What you’ve written is basically it. Due to the bridges condition no train movements are currently permitted over it. What the plan is going forward is not yet known to us outside the privileged few and may not even be known to them.

I think this sums up the current situation, taken from the staff newsletter dated 12/1/26. It seems that we need to be patient while the assessment is carried out but there is a promise that we will be kept informed as things progress.

So basically ,it’s been allowed to deteriorate ,to an extent its immediately post inspection ,unusable without repairs of which no plans to repair were in place ?

No that is not the case. The problem with the bridge was known about and I understand that plans were in place to deal with it. However it has since been overtaken by events. I have heard that part of the problem is the increased rate of river bank erosion in addition to the bridge structure itself. This may just be internal speculation on the railway but given current weather patterns it is quite feasable.. I think the current management can be criticised for much about the current state of the railway but the state of Bridge 42 is not down to them.

The Mallaig extension of the West Highland Line (used by the Jacobite) is maintained by Network Rail. What's his plan for getting NR to take over maintenance of the NYMR?

Just catching up... thanks for this detailed update! I saw a video of the convoy including 31466, 92134 and 34072. The steam engines both looked to be actively working rather than just in light steam - was that the case?

Yes, we all did our bit, although it was not very challenging. We were a bit disappointed that the diesel was put on the front but it was no big deal.

I'm getting vibes that the catalyst for the sudden change in the Br.42 situation was the appointment of a new Civil Engineering director who seemingly had a different view on the situation and what should be happening.

I've seen that mentioned elsewhere too. Explains the suddenness of the closure and the unpreparedness of the railway trying to deal with it.

That doesn't bode well. We had a similar change of views but in the opposite direction last year, a much more pleasant experience :)

Bear in mind that the Chief Civil Engineer's opinion on which structures are safe and what can be run over them trumps everyone else.

It is beginning to look as though the NYMR is going to go bust this year. If the new Civil Engineer decides that the bridge must be closed whilst the repairs are carried out it is difficult to see how through services to Whitby can realistically continued, but if he decides instead that the bridge can stay open with props installed, how long will it take to get the paperwork for the work to be completed for permission to be given by the EA and other organisations, let alone actually carry out the work? And, who really believes that all the paperwork, propping and the work itself will cost the 250K that has been floated ? Add to that the loss of the runround loop at Goathland and the whole thing has "shambles" written large all over it. To my mind, the only good thing that might emerge would be if a financial rescue could be worked out but a condition of it might be the replacement of the present management, PLC and even senior Trust Board officials.
