The plan is indeed to slew the headhunt over to the running line this coming week. I understand it’s not quite that easy as the two lines aren’t at the same height but nothing a bit of jacking and packing can’t sort out.

And all that controversy about FS starting from Grosmont. I hate to be conspiratorial, but was such an effort made to start from the northern end of the line because the bridge situation was known about, and if it was deemed unsafe before the start of FS’s trains the money already banked in ticket sales, essential for the future of the line, could be claimed against insurance?

Was the upcoming bridge work mentioned much at the AGM?
A few pages back there was an allusion, from an insider, about operating a shorter railway in the future. Was he referring to this?

That scenario sounds like consequent loss to me. Good luck with getting an insurance to cough up for that.

That suggestion sounds both conspiratorial and devious. It don't credit the SMT with sufficient intelligence to consider i a possibility. More to the point, past experience with trains running only from Pickering-Grosmont makes me wonder if they'll even have enough common sense to open the Goathland cafe this time.......

Slew completed, Q6 to move before it is removed and reinstated for a swop on January 5th.

    Interpretation ( I think)
The slewing of the headhunt to connect with the running line has been completed. The Q6 will now be moved before the slew is disconnected ( for safety reasons). It will be reconnected on the 9th January to allow further movements.

I think the question being asked was probably why the slew needs disconnecting then reconnecting after such a short period of time. My guess (and it's only that) is that it is to allow PWay trains to be run to remove track material and spoil excavated from above the bridge arches.

If the slew is at the bottom of a gradient and now leads the main into the yard area where people work, you would disconnect to protect them, because any rail movement beyond the slew that has a brake failure or a slide etc etc is going to arrive quite suddenly.

Thanks, Steve. That makes sense now. I really could make no sense of the original post.

North Eastern Railway designed Open Third no. 945, built at York works in 1924.

The LNER Coach Association (LNERCA) and the Stainmore Railway Company (SRC) are delighted to announce that they have agreed on a collaboration to complete the restoration of 945 and rehome it to Kirkby Stephen East. There it will join an impressive collection of North Eastern railway carriages and rolling stock.

945 is currently at Ramparts at Barrow Hill where it was shortly be having a mechanical overhaul including bogies, brake system, gangways and steam heat. It will also have work on the panelling. Once that work is complete it will be available for traffic although there are further internal works that will be carried out in due course.

Ownership of 945 will remain with the LNERCA who also own NER Luggage Composite 1111 built in 1890 and Gresley corridor brake third 3669 of 1930, both located at Kirkby Stephen.

945 was completed by the LNER to NER Diagram 155. The carriage was built with standard LNER features; no end windows, Gresley bogies and Pullman gangways. It was lined in NER fashion, (to match the style of mouldings), but lettered LNER and carrying large ‘3’ numbers on the doors rather than ‘Third’. It was given the ‘y’ suffix to the number to specify that it was York built. Later the LNER adopted a ‘2’ prefix for ex NER carriages and it became 2945.
Evidence is compelling that it was finished in varnished teak when built. A number of original panels on the carriage removed in the 1970’s were teak and it is unlikely that York carriage works would have painted those.
The carriage was originally rescued by the North Eastern Carriage Group in 1973 from departmental use and was slowly restored at Goathland and later Levisham on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Ownership transferred to the LNERCA in January 2023 when the NERCG wound up.

Another heritage vehicle lost to the NYMR, where "heritage" is limited to Mk 1 coaches, it would seem. What will be going next? Not the CEO and SMT, mores the pity.

The autocar managed to get to Levisham (10am off Pickering) this morning before being declared a failure due to a battery issue. Was recovered by 44806 which was in stream for the pullman later in day.

I am not surprised that the battery did not last to Lewisham, that is a long way!!
