A 67 should be capable of 100mph running, the issue is with the Belmond Pullman generator car on the rear which is maximum speed of 80mph.

It's as much down to acceleration. Electric traction can reach maximum speed far quicker than a 67, which due to its gearing is a little sluggish with heavier loads.

All irrelevant now by looks of it unfortunately :(

It's a bit of a rock and a hard place isn't it, will there even be time to allow passengers off at Newcastle, i assume the diesel will be attached on the back from york-newcastle to save time on the turn around.

It's already on the back, so in theory just uncouple 60103+POB at Newcastle and straight back home.

I am surprised that Belmond has loaned their generator car for a train that I didn't think had anything to do with Belmond.

Don't think they operate north of London anymore.

How come there are problems like this in a perfectly straightforward special train trip?
It really puts me off booking on anything. Blue Peter had an almost faultless trip up to Edinburgh.

1Z72 arrived NCL 150 down. 1Z73 on its way back to YRK now with the 67 in charge, 48 late at Low Fell. 35 late at Ferryhill S Jn.

EDIT - 60103 ran round her support coach in the platform and has run to Tyne Yard tender-first.

So disappointed to hear what happened today. Much have been gutting for the crew and passengers on the train. Really hope this doesn't put UK Railtours off from doing another Flying Scotsman trip.

Side Note. Was interesting to see the Bellmond Generator coach on the rear, all in all a very odd consist with Mk3 coaches, Mk1 support coach, Belmond Pullman liveried generator car, Purple Class 67 and then Flying Scotsman. Certainly a combination I never expected to see ever on the mainline together.

The reason the Belmond Generator van was on the train was to heat the train when Flying Scotsman was on the train as the original plan was for the Cl67 to work Kings Cross - York only.
When things went wrong, it was changed to add the Class 67 back on to facilitate a speedier return home from Newcastle.
