Does anyone know whether a GWR Railcar made it to Brighton at the end of their life in the 1960s? A confirmation or not would settle an argument! Many thanks for any gen.

W20 was delivered in 1966 via Robertsbridge, on the Hastings line so wouldn’t have gone via Brighton.

It was out of gauge for the ‘Restriction 0’ route so a possession was required, with nothing permitted to move on the other track, and the Railcar weighted to lean over towards the centre.

Thanks. A friend, who is not a railway enthusiast, described a train he thought he saw at Brighton in the 1960s. After some discussion, I showed him on my phone a photo of a GWR railcar. He said that was it. I told him that he wouldn't have seen one at Brighton, but he was adamant.

Could this possibly be a railcar either attending a Gala / Open Day event a Brighton Works or en route to a heritage line for a gala event ? Remembering that in the early 1960s preserved vehicles were quite often moved around the network unofficially thanks to enthusiast railwaymen. One such case occurred in the 1970s when railwaymen "arranged " for a class 45 to work a Birmingham - Brighton service throughout aided by the diagramming of crews who knew both the traction and the appropriate routes.
