On the return, after 30mins of almost continuous climbing since leaving Carlisle 71000 was onto the long (7+ miles) of 1/125r. From MP47.25 (Eden Valley S), the average EDHP for the next 5 miles was 1200 (average speed 51.5mph).

The more we analyse what 71000 did north and south, the more it becomes clear that all day the loco was working well within itself whilst at the same time producing some pretty good performances. I know that it is a Class 8 and it only had 10 up but it was also climbing a few pretty challenging hills. The crew gave all the signs that everything was well under control and the clever thing about that is that it seems they were satisfied without getting exhausted and the punters enjoyed the experience.

Why on earth has it taken so long to get a steam trip over the Fells when nobody seems to be unhappy about what went on? (That really is a rhetorical question!)

Was anyone unhappy with Bahamas in March or the Earl the previous March?

I know it was a rhetorical question, but it's been several years since we had a class 8 on its own up there. May there be more.
