I watched it last night and it was a lot better than the Channel 5 programme. Less cheesy.

This is already becoming an issue on the 'big' railway with the second-gen BR DMU fleet so it'll be even worse in a few years for heritage lines.

Although not NYMR-specific, I found the comment a couple of pages back about lines overhauling engines that aren't suited to their needs quite interesting. I've seen a few in the last few years, though many of them I'll admit are rooted in some degree of nostaliga, such as DFR restoring Uskmouth No.1 despite it being too small to haul their service trains. And herein lies an interesting question - how do you balance the operational needs whilst also not discarding your history?

I'll be interested to see what the NYMR do with the fake J94 Austerity tank - I know some people feel it'll be great for off-peak shuttles but I'd imagine its water capacity would be a limitation?

I watched it on catchup yesterday and thought it was a really good advert for the railway. I was never a great fan of the last TV series the railway did with its fake drama added in, though there were good bits. The new one seems much more down to earth with lots of behind the scenes and factual content. Lots of bits you might never see or might not think it was part of the railways work of you visited. There is still the odd issue with continuity when showing the train travelling if you know the railway, but otherwise it was well filmed and put together. Piglet was the main presenter who I think always does a good job, though the supporting cast so to speak also represented there parts well. Anyone with even a vague interest in Steam or Heritage Railways will get something out of it.

I have to say bearing in mind the strained financial position I was a bit confused by the J94 arrangement. There are a few areas that need money at the moment (Green Knight, Teaks, Goathland points, etc) that would arguably be of better benefit. Though I also appreciate it is being opportunist with NELPG having a gap between engines and while the NYMR is financing, I suspect some 'free' volunteer labour will be used.

But as you say how they use it will be interesting to see what they have planned for it. I think the Lambton, much as I love it, is under utilized. There must be a question about this one as well.

With the huge interest in the return of 71000 Duke of Gloucester to the WCML yesterday, might that be available for a special visit next year?

In other news the pay to view NYMR webcams are coming soon; £1.99 per month.

Thought the new TV programme was very good, although I must have misheard piglet when he said Goathland box deals with 80-90 trains per day.

Yes really enjoyed it - I thought Piglet did a really good job of explaining what he was doing and why, it was properly educational. Even my wife was interested!

The gift of 80136 by its previous owning group involved the NYMR also providing a home for the J94. The opportunity has been taken to collaborate with NELPG on returning it to service with the primary aim of hiring it our for revenue earning service on other heritage railways.

You're right, but you also have to consider the motivation of the loco owner. I can't speak for anyone else, and I do get that for some people/groups the loco is the main thing, but from my own perspective the motivation was very much to help the railway I was already a part of, and had I not had that motivation (nor some spare cash at the right time) the loco would have been scrapped. So suggesting that they were somehow doing me a favour by providing somewhere to run it, doesn't really ring true. Also as a non-loco-driver, I think I only got to drive it once (from one siding to another, under supervision). And meanwhile other projects I was involved with on and off the railway suffered as the loco was a time stealer. In fact, one part of me thinks they could have done me a bigger favour by telling me they didn't want it when I made the first tentative enquiries as it sat in the scrap yard...
    (Still... no regrets, right...?)

I thoought that it was good. However, I do think that a lot of what Piglet narrated was scripted and he was reading it. It was him speaking but it just wasn't him, if you understand what I mean. To me he is much better when he is his normal self. I liked Bungle's contribution, as well.

I have suggested that the Austerity should be another candidate for oil firing. Those with long memories will remember Antwerp and Meteor back in the '80's. They were both capable of hauling 6 coach trains but in 'Twerps case its weak link was that it didn't steam as well as 31 and could lose time because of it. Oil firing should overcome that drawback and it would then be useful as a dry weather loco. The 1200 gallon water capacity was not a problem in 'Twerps time.

Thank you. I had registered to watch Channel 4 at one time but have just had to re-register. Starting to watch and being confronted by an advert lasting over a minute I think I may have cancelled my previous account because of the ads. Once past the advert the programme would have been OK but for my pet hate of extraneous music. I gave up after a few minutes. I will put up with the music only if the subject matter is sufficiently compelling. Fortunately many YouTube videos are without music.

I think like most streaming services you can pay a monthly fee and have no ads. Sure that comes up during my F1 viewing. I am just too mean to pay.:)

Sometimes you can get lucky. I have watched programmes on More 4 and My 5 sometimes and seen no ads whatsoever. You get the usual "Sponsored by" short video when the ad break is supposed to begin, then when it ends it plays again and you're straight into the next part of the show. Other times I only get a single 30 second ad during the ad break. Other times I get a full 4minutes of ads. It varies, but in general I do find there to be less ads than were I to watch them off the telly live.

Yes the last Grand Prix (Mexico) had all the breaks for ads with the F1 caption either end, but no ads at all. Best one yet you normally get at least one set of ads.

If you have Sky Stream you can skip all the adverts on all the popular on demand services, cheaper than subscribing to them all individually at £5 per month.
