I think 7029 would qualify as well. Tyseley purchased it from BR in 1966 immediately after its withdrawal.

Fair point. Do you have the date to prove otherwise? I believe that assertion is correct.

Agree about the continuous ownership but I think you will find that the time out of service since 1966/7 is longer with Clun than with Clan.

But if I am wrong it's good company to be in. :)

And to add to the list, it was the first main line locomotive to be fitted to haul air brake trains. And we all know the problems we now have as a result of the limited number that later took that route.

No mention of 45407 - it lasted in BR traffic a whole year longer than 35028 and returned to the main line about the same time as the Merchant Navy. I dont know if it has been out of service longer in the interim but I would guess that it has spent more days operating on the network and accumulating a higher mileage than everyones favorite Bulleid Pacific. Both are highly respected achievements

It is the only main line locomotive that has been in continuous main line service since the end of steam - except for overhauls.
The "end of steam" was 11th August 1968 (or 9th July 1967 if you are a Southerner) and, according to https://www.clan-line.org.uk/35028-2/ , 35028 did not return to the mainline until 27th April 1974.

The test trip was 12 September 1994, seen here passing Winchester. The working was Southall to Southampton and return, out via Andover (I think) and return via Winchester.

    Cheers, Neil

Be optimistic that, all things being equal, you may see a steam hauled train in Kent this Thursday with no other form of traction anywhere in the consist.

Given that even VT is running around with a diesel on the back, this may be one of those historical 'summer of 2025' moments.

However, it may also need a few people to hold their breath.

    From Facebook.

"We are sorry to announce that due to a failure of an electrical system in the early hours of this morning, which could not be resolved in time, Clan Line was unable to haul today's GAOT, despite the best efforts from everyone involved.

Our team is working to fix this immediately and we are in the process of resolving the issue in question. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to have the locomotive back operational as soon as possible."

They say everything happens in threes.

So that's three failures, with three different locomotive owners, three different maintenance teams and for three different reasons. Two mechanical and one (annoyingly) electrical. 70000, 45212 and now 35028. But the outcomes were the same. No steam.

Hopefully that will, at least, leave Tornado clear for the Duchy at the weekend.

Given the conditions, what are the chances of '28 hauling (or being pushed) this Thursday?

I think the Belmond generator car is currently being serviced, so either way there will possibly be something hanging off the back on Thursday.

My bet is for 'something' tucked behind '28, but I hope I'm wrong.

There will need to be something in the train consist somewhere. Exactly where will be for the TOC to decide I assume.

Good news from the folk at the MNLPS. <BJ>

''We're all set and ready to go for tomorrow! Clan Line will be out with British Pullman for the trip to Dover Priory and back from Victoria. We look forward to it!''

I wish all well for tomorrow, but I cannot reconcile the parched conditions with the running of steam. Fingers crossed for no incidents.

Someone asked on the Facebook page if tomorrow's run will be assisted and they've replied "not tomorrow".

Agreed. In Mid-Kent my rain gauge has recorded 3 mm of rain in August so far. 1/10th of an inch. And a fairly strong NE wind over the last few days that I imagine has been keeping everything very dry.

Other parts may have had more, but in the SE at least I find it strange that any steam is out on the main line, assisted or not.

Fingers very firmly crossed for no incidents with 35028 today.
