Simon makes a fair point here. 37688 was brought in a) for the gala and b) to support with Whitby work thereafter. Both of which require it to work vacuum-braked trains. So who signed off the hire of a loco that may not have worked a vac-braked train in up to four years and whose current stewards and owners have no way to guarantee that the vacuum brake system actually works?

Aside from that, I noticed 688 was repaired mid-way through the gala, but then I saw a further post suggesting it had failed again when T&Ting a train to Pickering with 418. What was the second failure down to?

 

Traction motor flashover is what my mate who was there told me earlier today.

44806 and 926 used today, the latter shuttling between Whitby and Grosmont so that diesel train passengers ex Pickering got to see steam at Whitby at least.

 

I’ll ask about, haven’t heard from other sources.

 

Heatwave coming up. The Moors have had very little serious rain in the last couple of weeks. Much of the forecast rain, enjoyed elsewhere, hasn't really appeared.

It's good to see steam returning, let's hope it can continue through the summer.

With the conversations further up - noticed this movement on RTT which I've seen elsewhere to be mentioned as being 31128. Would seem a bad time to loose it, if 37688 has had a failure. Would leave only 926 for Whitby (with 5428 under repair and 44806 still waiting for parts?).

Needs Tyre Turning, so it's not something that can really be put off if it's to continue in service, shouldnt be away too long I imagine. (I seem to remember when it took 37264 to leeds it was only a couple of days before it was back again)

 

926 and 5428 are sharing the Whitby trains today with 44806 on the Pickering trains

 

For those familiar with the area: I have to drive to Whitby next week for work, from the York direction and if the weather is nice I’d quite like to take the scenic route over the moors from Pickering. Looking on a map, I can go out of Pickering on the road to New Bridge/Stape and then go either towards Goathland or Grosmont to the A169, or carry on straight to the A170. I’m leaning towards the Grosmont option to see if I can visit the shop.

Im perfectly comfortable driving the moors and the dales but I don’t know those roads specifically - is there anything I should know about any of them?

Who have not read the Highway Code

 

Hopetown - Titans of Steam Gala event including the P3 and Q6 looks to indicate these two wont be at the NYMR steam gala this year. I wonder what sort of a line up that will leave at Grosmont?

 

Sir Nigel, Tornado and the K1 also attending that event and thus ruled out of the NYMR gala. I'd assume that they were aware of this but that definitely a couple of residents and three of the more regular visitors ruled out in one hit of the enter key.

 

In theory still leaves 29, 5428, 4806, 926, 80136, 92134 plus maybe 2 or 3 visitors, if everything is fit and firing. Maybe 2253 as well. Is 825 close to a return too or is that a long-term absentee? I've lost track

 

A comment a while back from the Essex Loco Society suggested 2026 for 825.

Ah no don't forget Lucie! My Lucy loved meeting Lucie at Shildon a few weeks ago. In this world of children if Lucie appears on the gala list that will be a quick win for me!

 

Staff talk at the recent diesel gala was that the railway was holding out on hiring in locos due to the continued dry spell........

Fact or fiction - who knows.

 

Just announced on NYMR FB page that'll be all diesel for the weekend.
