Oh! That's OK then, we can carry on talking about music, it has an L&B connection! :D

Had to look that one up to be honest, they toured the area quite extensively playing at The Queens in Barnstaple along with The Pink Fairies!

Interesting link here to the gigs played in North Devon through the ages, don't get any big time gigs in the Queens or any Earth Fayre now.

All this discussion of music(?) performers is a total closed book to me. I have just about heard of Buddy Holly and neither know nor wish to know anything about any of them.

It makes a change from needles (for records) to drawn daggers which seem to be the norm lately for this thread. ;)

This thread seems to be suffering in the same way the WSR threads used to during their crises; when things went quiet for a bit a number of people who posted almost exclusively on that one thread got restless not having anything new to talk about and took the thread way off topic. I pointed out then and I'll gently point out now that there is a whole forum of discovery out there beyond this thread if there's nothing L&B related to talk about :) The music thread is here.

There will inevitably be a bit of a hiatus, as voting slips are being received and sent in, and most people have decided how they will vote by now, but I'm sure things will liven up again on or about May 11th!

Talking of the L&B, has anybody seen the Messerschmitts at Woody Gate?

My own conclusion is that I would not be starry eyed about Apple/MIcrosoft/Google but actually you have to have an operating system. None are perfect, all are surviving high wire acts which have not yet fallen off. All save possibly one are in fact now different flavours of Unix which all the mobile operating systems are.

Of the current big three all have some surprisingly good points but I am aware of the downside of the concentration and some of the "co working" between them has been discrete - "firewalled " indeed - but deep: at one point Microsoft developed major applications on the Macintosh operating system and then ported them to work on their own Windows! When Apple used Intel chips as CPUs their desk and lap tops were readily enabled to run Microsoft Windows near natively.
But I think they all joined in together to point out the downside of trying to control what happens on the "dark web" etc by abridging the security of encryption.
Google, rather remarablely, have enabled a whole suit of privacy browsers which do not report automatically to Google Search or Youtube by releasing the source code of their own Chrome browse as Chromium in full, available for free use and to modify.

Funnily enough I was just catching up and thinking exactly the same thing when I read your post, and remember well how the WSR thread was the same as you say.

Mod note - Please can we try to remain on the subject this thread is about - the L&B .

As @flying scotsman123 says there is a whole forum with many subjects to explore, including music as he helpfully linked to which will help to pass the time during a lull. This particular thread isn’t a general chat one and all the off topic discussion is doing is diluting the real debate that has been taking place and risking losing it all amongst some largely irrelevant posts.

Therefore can we get back on topic please.

Some months ago I made the decision not to renew my membership of the L&B and to put that cash towards a project elsewhere that stands a reasonable chance of succeeding.

I was somewhat surprised this afternoon to receive in the post the paperwork for the forthcoming AGM.

As I am no longer a member I won't be returning any of it but I do wonder how many other cases there might be.

Of course, an organisation that retained your personal data beyond the point at which they needed it for the stated business purpose might be on somewhat sticky ground in GDPR terms ;)

    Too soon? :)

Maybe they think you are still a member? It would 'interesting' IMHO (if perhaps morally wrong) to send in a postal vote anyway and then see what reaction you get :)

I don’t have my copies of the M&As to hand, but I think I remember words there about voting rights only being removed when monies owed are more than 3 months overdue. If I’m right, and membership has only “not been renewed”, then it’s hard to see how the Trust could do other than send the papers given the timings of renewal and AGM notice requirements.

Personal data may be retained for statuatory purposes. For example if gift aid has been claimed for a member - details have to be held for a number of years.

A similar situation existed in another Trust to which I used to belong. Indeed, I recall deciding not to renew my membership when it expired on Dec 31st one year, but still managed to compel them to send me the first Magazine issue of the following year as we had not yet reached the March 31st deadline for 'late payments' :)

Anyway, I was thinking about that recently in light of the number of Trust members complaining that new membership cards had not yet arrived in time to vote, so I looked at the L&BRT's M&AoA but could not find anything on this matter at all. If I've missed it, then perhaps someone could kindly point me to the relevant Clause(s) please.

The only thing which I did find that might throw some light on the matter is Clause 2(1) which states "The subscribers to the memorandum and such other persons or organisations as are admitted to membership in accordance with the rules made under Article 61 shall be members of the Charity..."
[Note: Article 61 actually relates to Trust Accounts, the reference should be to Article 69 - another error in the M&AoA!]
So I wonder if it may be something which is covered by one of those mysterious rules or bye-laws (see in particular Clause 69(1)(i)) which do not appear to be published anywhere (in contravention of Clause 69(2) "....and the trustees shall adopt such means as they think sufficient to bring to the notice of members of the Charity all such rules or bye laws....")?

One would expect legal costs, stamp duty etc to be capitalised as part of the acquisition costs and not taken to the p&l account. Insurance one would expect to be a recurring item is will affect every year.

The inspections might have pushed the overall p&l into loss but it would be worrying if they did.

The bigger question is, is the pub generating free cashflow or,eating cash.

As one of the "endorsed" candidates, the first that I heard of being on that list was a friend taking the micky about it on Saturday. I was actually expecting to be standing AGAINST a set of "official" candidates selected by the Board. I suspect that Giles was likewise surprised to be endorsed.
I think a key reason for endorsing me and Giles is that Peter & Co know who we are as we are - Giles is a regular loco volunteer and I have been about in the L&B volunteering community for a long time. Of course, hopefully they also believe that we would make good Trustees.
Of course, you are free to vote as you see fit, but please don't read too much into the endorsement.

As I understand it, all memberships run from 1 April to 31st March. The renewal process takes a little time (I pay by Direct Debit but haven't had my new card yet) and I think they do give some grace for late renewal. You may be in a "zombie member" state of being in the grace period for renewal unless you have informed the membership secretary that you will not be renewing.
That said, I think they do check the membership numbers on voting forms to weed out non-members.

Just out of interest even if those details have to be retained for what you state, if you don't renew a membership how would the trust stand by contacting you after that point

I do not see this as in any way sinister or irratating - in fact it is fairly common practice in contested elections. With 6 candidates for 4 trustees a number of things are bound to happen (1) at least two of the candidates recommended by the board will be elected (2) if you use your four votes then at least two of the candidates you vote for will be elected (3) Of the 5 canddidates seeking election for the first time one will not be elected.

You need to read the personal statements of the candidates [either the long statements or the short ones or both] and decide which of the candidate(s) most closely aligns with what you think the trust should be doing. Whether the trust has endorsed them or not is irrelevant.

One of 'endorsed' candidates has posted on this forum and stated that they had no idea that they were being endorsed.
