You may find it useful to visit the 6024 website http://www.6024.com where you will find a paper which addresses most of the issues you raise and shows the benefits and penalties for a range of different itineraries and train loads.     Im sure i read the reason it is not used at the moment is that it flat spotted it wheels on a test run, during an emergency brake test.

    It must be hard to estimate braking efficency and force required depending upon the amount of water in the second tender.

    The amount of brake force would have to be adjusted depending upon the amount of weight carried. That must be hard to engineer. Also mention was made of it interfeering with the TPWS OTMR equipments aerials etc..

    Sure this is the reason, would be a great facility to use, especially with 90mph running.

    Yes, but once again, certain people don't seem to be able to get to grips with such problems and come up with a durable solution.

    Those eight wheel LNER tenders have a rather crude brake system. There is no brake compensation at all between the wheelsets. They (LNER tenders) are not alone in that, but it is just about the worst case that exists in a vehicle that has a widely fluctuating weight in service. Once the brake blocks are bedded in, there's not too much of a problem if the vehicle is heavily loaded. But as soon as anything upsets the equalibrium between the wheelsets, all the brake force can easily be applied to just one axle. There is also no brakeforce compensation according to load, such as there is on some container vehicles. One could argue that it's high time that such a system was applied, and really it's not such a difficult thing to design around. But the need for design approval works against progress in the sense that it is easier - and more importantly cheaper - just to leave well alone, if no-one is forcing the issue. Even though it means having a vehicle in traffic with serious shortcomings in the brake department.

    I'm not convinced that is the real reason why that particular vehicle is not being used. It's more likely there is another issue which has not been resolved.

    I had a prime experience of this with 60163 only this week. Approaching Newtondale Halt, which is a request stop, we were confronted by a guy stood on the very end of the platform holding a red flag between his hands. I had no option but to make a heavy brake application. However, the loco and tender had recently been re-blocked and, even though the brake application was not a full one, one of the tender wheelsets picked up and put some small flats on the wheelset. Fortunately, not severe and they have now worn off.
    It turned out the guy was a punter wanting the train and the flag was actually a red tee shirt he was holding up between his hands. What was more annoying was that he admitted to working on the railways and knew what a red flag meant. If it had been Jenny Agutter, I could have forgiven the action!

    Well the MRS brother is a big fan of Top Gear and when I first heard about it I told him about it. Well a few days later he was at my house and I had a copy of heritage railway to hand with the article about Tornado and Top Gear in so I showed him. I expected him to glance at the article and look at the pictures but he didn't, he sat there and read the whole article word for word. Then he sat and read the whole mag cover to cover declaring "these old steam trains are amazing things, wonderful machinery etc". We then talked about main line steam in general and now as result he wants to experience the mainline! And this is before we've seen the feature!!! He even rang me this week to remind me that Top Gear with Tornado was this week! Trust me this is Darren I am talking about - If you knew him you would understand the shock! If this is an indication of how the GP will receive it (bearing in mind he hasn't even seen it yet) then yes maybe it will encourage them to experience steam. I hope so personally I think if as good as Danny says then it will be one of the biggest public awareness boosters of the last few years.

    just back from minehead wiv big T after 10 days of fun there wiv the nice people at WSR
    thanks to paul conibeare GM WSR =D>
    bit of a slow run back to london though #-o

    am out all day wiv T tomorrow so cant wait to see the tv show when i get in (i've sky hd+'d it lol)

    from wot i hear and wot i saw when i was onboard for filming the trip it should be stunning and very pro-steam mainline =D>

    Incidentally, in the Steam Railway forum Danny says..
    "was lucky enough to be at the filming of Sunday's Top Gear yesterday and got a sneak preview of the Tornado race to the north sequence. It is a stunning bit of work.
