Besides, 34067 was already booked for the London-Bristol leg, and they must have been half expecting Lizzie not to be ready in time. This is a little different.

Let's hope Ollie is restored to health quickly.

There's always 5043 to go see (see other thread)...

thats a huge disappointment for everyone booked on this train, and of course the support crew. Hope she can be fixed before too long.

Can someone kindly explain briefly what a mud hole door is? Many thanks

Mud Hole - An oval opening (approximately hand sized) in the boiler plate allowing access for inspection and washing out.

Mud Hole door - A solid oval piece of metal with a threaded shaft extending from the middle. The door fits through a mud hole (approximately hand sized) and butts against the inside of the outer boiler plate. A clamp fits over the shaft which is bolted down sealing the door against the boiler plate.

I noticed one fizzing quite well yesterday at Liverpool Street, and knowing these modern gasket materials dont hold up as well as the old asbestos ones thought it would soon have to be changed rather than just being nipped up.

I was told it was seen to be leaking this morning and was nipped up, which stopped the leak, but a few minutes later it went. I don't think changing it was an option, as the loco wouldn't have cooled down enough to be able to effect a repair, then get it warm again for tomorrow's trip.

It was a disappointment not to see 70013 on this train but I think most people will understand the reasons why it could not be there. Lets hope this fine engine will be fit and well for two weeks time.
