Actually more than I thought. The T & DR is a depository for ex NYMR locos with three runners.

    I don't think 53809 has worked since October 2022, though it's nominally got a certificate until 2026.

Off the top of my head, I think Jennifer, 47, 4277, 34027, 45212, 75014, 90775 and 2253 are currently operable from that pool

So, the two that left because they were deemed be of little to no practical value then? If you want to go down that road, perhaps Rocket, the Sentinel "potting shed" and FR20 would be better alternatives although admittedly none of them have been NYMR-based (although the Sentinel would make a very nice station pilot for Pickering!).

But it is only for a gala weekend, 61624, so does it matter that they were deemed of no practical value way back then?

If the management thought it was worth bringing 85 from Haworth for what little work it did at last year's gala, then bringing in something like Jennifer wouldn't seem so left field?

Fair point, and No. 85 is not the only Gala visitor over the years without much ability to haul passenger trains. No. 85, though, had a connection with Lambton 29 and I believe they double headed, although I wasn't there to see them. Conversely we have seen several early residents such as Mirvale and Salmon, for example, and other examples of similar sized locos, but times are tighter these days and don't we want to bring in locos that can earn their keep? That's why I would suggest Lambton 60 as a possible guest, again to work with 29.

Would be very nice to have a GWR-free event. Think Jennifer would be high on my list, and an Austerity.

I'd love to see a Jub but it's such a shame Leander's in black and basically just looks like a Black 5.

Apparently a few years ago there was talk of a fast-track overhaul on Mirvale for this year. Really wish it had happened!

With the loss of 76079 and 825 for the foreseeable future is the railway looking to bring in another steam locomotive for the Whitby pool?

I don't know, but I suspect not. They have 5428 and 30926 available and 44806 on the way (although I doubt whether it will get run-in and main line load-tested to be of much help this year and save the cost of hiring in another engine. As long as Whi8tby services can be worked by a single loco shuttling from Grosmont-Whitby they should be OK. Hopefully, 75029 will be added to the pool for next year as well, so I think it's a question of trying to hold on for this year. In any case, is there anything much that is suitable to be hired in and available, unless one of the Riley Black 5s is.

44806’s boiler today was busy being prepped for an impending test and return to the frames. Really good to see.

Just as well since Repton was failed this morning with a tube issue…

I see that they were down to just the 9F today. Anyone know if things look like they may improve steam wise before Wednesday?

Thanks for the updates. You have to hope that Repton is an easy fix, having one steam Whitby locomotive for the gold timetable is asking for trouble. I appreciate that there aren't many mainline capable locomotives around. Black 5 or Royal Scot from Locomotive services, Bahamas, Riley Black 5, or West Coast Jubilee or Black 5 are probably the only ones that are suitable but I suspect wouldn't be available.

Is the J27 fit for service at the moment (I know it isn't and would never be Whitby registered)?

Yes that is passed for traffic, I believe it will be replacing the 9F when that is due for washout

The railway started the season with an expectation of having nine operational locos (29, 825, 926, 5428, 65894, 63395, 76079, 80136 & 92134) with the likely entry into service of 44806 during the late summer. That should have been enough by far as on most days it only needs three steam locos. It still has six locos, assuming 926 can be fixed, although 29 & 65894 are not rated for 7 coach trains.

Is there any news on 34101 at all?

No news on 34101 afaik, I think a lot of fingers will be crossed hoping that 30926 will be a straightforward repair.
I suspect Royal Scots and Jubilees are too big to go to Whitby, which really only leaves the Riley Black 5s as candidates and I'd have thought they are pretty much fully committed to West Hihland services. I think the folk at Grosmont will be fervently hoping that the problem with 30926 is nothing too serious.
