    I don't think TR No 7 Tom Rolt has left Tywyn since being built?
    The donor loco for the boiler, wheels etc, did arrive by road of course!

    The Exmore Garratts were largely complete units when they arrived in the UK, having been initially imported for the abortive Robin Hoods Bay scheme. Here is No. 87 stored on an industrial site near Pickering, carried on two wagons much like a tender loco would be. The other two Garratts, 115 and 130, were in a similar state and also on two wagons apiece, while the NG15s 133 and 134 were on the ground on tempory bits of track 98-11-15 1 87 copy.jpg

    That to me is a largely complete loco on road transport.

    Just to add to this, though it isn't strictly relevant to the discussion, I believe the RHB/Exmoor locos were shipped to the UK dismantled and in containers, so maybe travelled some distance by road in that form too!

    That example is off topic as the loco is on normal road trailers and not a low loader.

    It is likely that very few narrow gauge locomotives have actually been on low loaders as they are generally small enough to fit on a normal flat bed. Most are old enough to have been delivered by rail, though not on their own wheels of course. If I recall the Talyllyn locomotives were transported by ship to Aberdovey and a short trip by rail from there, and the original Ffestiniog locos to Caernarfon and horse and cart..

    Being serious - I don’t know for sure, but generally there is an element of truth in TTTE; it is entirely feasible to me that the illustrator was working from an original photo, something I know happened with other illustrations.

    Edit to add: I can’t think how else you would have got from Whitehaven to west Wales in the 1860s with a heavy awkward load apart from by sea - at least not easily.

    Other than No 7 I think all of the TR locos have been on a low loader at some point. I'm not sure that there were any flat beds capable of moving a loco in the 50's and 60's. Here's No 6 Douglas arriving at Wharf from Hunt Bros in Oldbury in 1953 following regauging:-

    Nice piece of vintage road transport! Is this the first move by low loader in the preservation era? Corris No's 3 and 4 came to the TR by rail.
    No 6 is not in steam - that is No 3 Sir Haydn below the bridge, waiting to drag No 6 off the low loader and push No2 Dolgoch on for the return trip to Oldbury.
    Messrs Caudle of Birmingham seemed to be the preferred transport in later years, bringing TR No's 1 and 2 back following rebuilding. There are a few photos in books, but I can't find any on the web. IIRC They were also used by other railways, including the SVR to move the Manning Wardle Warwickshire in 1967:-

    Caudles delivered a number of other locos to the SVR, including 47383, 813, 686, L92 (5786), L95 (5764) and Invicta.

    A little update to my previous post. I realised that the move by low loader of No 6 to Towyn (Tywyn) wasn't the first of the preservation era. No 6 was donated to the TR by Abelson and Co (Engineers) of Sheldon, Birmingham and transported to Hunt Bros at Oldbury for regauging and other work. Here it is at either Abelsons or Hunts earlier in 1953:-

    Note the 20mph speed limit for the low loader! As it is being lifted by crane, the rear wheels of the low loader must not have been removable. As a consequence of the lift No 6's bunkers were dented on both sides - visible until they were replaced (1970's?).
    Anyway, back to loco's that didn't get moved by low loader.......

    Thanks Steve - I had forgotten that it had gone to Donny for a repaint. Presumably it went by road, although some such move were by rail at this time. Interestingly at the same time as Aerolite's repaint I have pictures of Stirling No1 being repainted - this taking place on the turntable in the Main Hall

    This prompts a question from me as to what was the last industrial steam loco to run on the Network and when. I don’t have an answer but offer HE 3168 from Allerton Bywater to Wheldale collieries in 1980.
