Anyone travelling into Manchester by train on Sunday to join The Tin Bath, please note that Metrolink trams will not be running between Piccadilly and Victoria stations due to engineering works. A replacement bus runs every 12 minutes (in theory) from Fairfield Street outside Piccadilly station, or you can simply walk from Picc to Vic, but make sure you allow enough time.

Also, don't forget that British Summer Time starts on Sunday and the clocks go forward by an hour.

As it is less that a mile, you should do it in a 15 minute brisk walk no trouble.

rode through Barnsley on tues, the steep curve out of the station would have been a super location, but its protected by the horrible silver spiky topped railings ](*,)

My mate did a video of the last run over the Barnsley branch in June last year. He stood on an old pit hill by Ecclesfield on the way up to Chapeltown. Its on Utube search under steam and Ecclesfield. I will try and put the link up here not sure if I can do it!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7anNWoFVas

On the bank out of Barnsley there looks like a footbridge over the line by Summer Lane according to the map. It would be a spectacular part of the route both locos at full power! Maybe to get a view over the railings you could take a small pair of step ladders, of course if you are on public transport then no!

The exit from Tankersley tunnel is in open country on the Elescar side its downhill after the tunnel though. The railway runs on an embankment.

Theres a climb up to the level crossing in Barnsley centre before the station. Usually trains are stopped at the bottom of this climb for the crossing to be set. I noticed 45407 was working hard on this climb last year.

The viaduct at Penistone is impressive very long, dont know which way the gradient is going though.

    Hope this helps Matt

    Cheers Brian

According to my gradient profile book, after Penistone station the first mile and a quarter is level so I would guess that this is the viaduct, after this its down all the way to Huddersfield, thirteen and a half miles, with only one level stretch approaching Stocksmoor. The gradient varies from 1:97 to 1:300, mostly being between 1:100 and 1:200. So it will be an interesting climb it the opposite direction as well. Unfortunately the book does not have the Barsnley to Penistone section.... :(

Thanks for the info gents, most useful. So far the plan is, The blast up Miles platting, over to Penistone for that magnificent viaduct, leapfrog to Lockwood viaduct whilst its stopped at stocksmore, and if i've not starved to death, Littleborough/clegg hall for the final leg.

Looking forward to the usual high standard of pics and vids gents, lets hope the sun shines !

Good luck to both crews and hope everyone has a jolly grand day out!

    Kind regards,

    Matt Curtis.

Yes, the Barnsley - Penistone section is a frustrating omission from the Ian Allan gradient profile book. A study of the local OS map does help though. The closer the contour lines are to each other, the steeper the climb. Outside of Barnsley the steepest sections would appear to be soon after Dodworth and the approach to Oxspring Tunnel.

Some info on gradients from Barnsley to Penistone:
Permissible speed is 40 to 50 mph except where stated.
Mileages are approximate and are from zero at the former Barnsley Jn at Penistone so descend going from Barnsley to Penistone.
OS grid refs. are quoted first; all prefixed SE and are approximate.

    347068. 6m 44ch Barnsley Station Jn, turnout speed 20mph, 1 in 50 starts.
339068. 5m 70ch Summer Lane, double track becomes single; about 100 yards later gradient eases to 1 in 67.
    326063. 5m 00ch, road overbridge, gradient eases to 1 in 100.
322061. 4m 60ch, east end of M1 bridge, gradient steepens to 1 in 42 for about 200 yards.
This short section of 1 in 42 may have been eliminated when the motorway bridge was put in?
    320060. 4m 50ch, west end of M1 bridge, gradient becomes 1 in 60.
    314057. 4m 11ch gradient becomes 1 in 159 falling then level to 4MP and there is a 25mph speed restriction from 4m 07ch to 3m 75ch.
313056. 4MP. The line begins to climb again at 1 in 96/90/145 to 3MP.
    311054. 3m 63ch Dodworth station.
    298051. 3MP, gradient becomes 1 in 100 to 0m 14ch at SE263027.

I believe this gradient info is up to date but see the comment on the 1 in 42 at the M1 bridge.
Please excuse any errors, and my apologies if Martin Bairstow's book (The Huddersfield & Sheffield Junction Railway) has more accurate or more easily assimilated info, I haven't seen a copy.

If you follow the track on THIS map you'll see two paths that cross the climb, Blackergreen Lane and Storrs Lane.

This is the view from Blackergreen Lane looking back towards Silkstone.

Sounds like a full day for you Matt!
I've a few things on tomorrow (taxi duties) but should get to my 'Cotton Mill' spot for tea-time.

They looked great as they passed Hazel Grove, photo here:-

    http://galleryneil.fotopic.net/p57178620.html

I was going up to Chinley or Edale but there seemed to be a problem on the A6 just past Hazel Grove and I moved about 200 yards in 20 minutes so ended up turning round and going back to the station. If I can find my video converter I will post up a short clip later.

I have had another update from Ralph and it seems they are bang on time through Barnsley.

    Thanks, Neil.
