You had a friend from south of the Thames last week, but despite visiting a beach described as "undoubtedly one of the Yorkshire Coast's most scenic destinations" I'm not sure I'd be swapping Dorset for the Yorkshire coast as a beach destination. (Rest of the trip was good though).

Somehow Tom, I don't envisage you as a beach bunny.:) Glad you enjoyed the rest of up north.

We have children :) I think all things considered, I got off reasonably lightly with the amount of early railway stuff we got to see ... More County Durham and Northumberland than Yorkshire.

It depends on the type of beach you like. Bridlington has a fantastic smooth clean sandy beach stretching for miles and largely empty once away from road access and parking. However, I don’t like it as I prefer my beaches to be small coves, preferably deserted. Even better if there are no dogs.

I might have said I want to see it, but maybe ghost their are other factors to my babyish squinney?
Like perhaps a green 4 tank with matching mark 1's / SR carriages on railways that are nearer to those who maybe cannot afford to travel up north?

We can't always get what we want. As Tom has already explained, there's a lot of cost involved to the NYMR if they were to send the loco down south for any period of time.
Maybe start saving for when the loco enters service?

I know we can't, then life wouldn't be life. :D
However the point I am making is that there will be many spotters who can't afford/can't physically get to railways like NYMR or KWVR to see certain trains like 80135.
Cost will be cost and that's the sad reality BUT you really cannot expect "X" amount of people from the South East to just save up all year, travel on 3 or 4 different trains, book hotel rooms that can often go like the snap of fingers and go through so much fuss and bother just to see something that once ruled the rails where they now live.

Although even in the recent past that does not seem to locos being sent long distances just for a gala weekend. Of course with all the costs now such things may be a thing of the past.

Well I would really like to see 71000 up close. Ignoring the gauge issue, should I be demanding the owners ship it to Belfast so a few of us can get a look?
Your argument is nonsense. If you can't afford something you save up until you can afford it, or you don't do it.

Enquiry: Merely out of interest how sure-footed is the 'Schools' with heavy trains on the NYM ? Given their reputation on hole metals, I could imagine the regulator needing a very deft touch.

Getting the thing going is always a challenge. On a dry rail the loco generally has no problem with 7 coach trains but it can be fun when autumn comes, even with steam sanders. Its also not helped by having no loco sanders in reverse, only tender sanders and these tend to block very easily.

The Schools obviously weren't designed to spend half their time tender first. Could sanders for reverse running be added, and if so would that not be an appropriate minor modification for the role that this loco now plays?

Nice to have an honest assesment... someone questioned it on Facebook a few months back and quite a few people got very cross that anyone should question its capabilities... from their reactions you'd have assumed a Schools class could out-perform a Class 60 with its SEPEX :Bored:
Not to mention the fact that the first time I visited the NYMR, Repton stalled on the bank somewhere and my train (behind 45212) was delayed for over half an hour whilst they sent a diesel to rescue it.

Repton is back on the roster as of today, presumably hauling trains unassisted (one of 4 steam - the others are 92134, 825 and 80136).

I don't think it has been particularly prone to slipping to a standstill on the bank in recent years, unless its tyres have been approaching the point of needing turning but I'm not a driver, fireman or guard so I could be wrong!

No, I haven't heard of it happening in recent years but in the past certainly.
