I think this flurry of activity is a good indication that the GCR(N) is steadily returning to life!

TBH I haven't made it down to site for several months so can't comment on where certain locos may or may not be. I'm also surprised that it seems all 3 S160s are up for sale, my understanding was it was just the 2 bought to act as spares for 1631 which were being offloaded. But maybe the owner has changed his mind and decided even one S160 is too much for him. Shame as that would be have been great to have on the GGCR once restored!

I agree. I based my comment on what has been posted on 1631's facebook page, but beyond that I have no insight really. I guess everything is for sale at a price, but that's hardly the point. I'm aware the owner of these is also responsible for at least one of the industrial steam locos on site and maybe it's a case of setting more realistic priorities in the hope of getting something finished. But I agree it's a shame, I think an S160 based on the GCR would be fabulous, just for the sake of having something a bit different. And there is a wartime photo of one running on the line somewhere (I think 'Main Line' published it when 5197 visited Loughborough a few years ago), so one would be perfectly apt for the line.

That depends on your perspective. The new board did come in with a remit to tidy up the site, and that's certainly happening, but I hope they don't end up with nothing left worth seeing. I'm sure most of us who have been involved in preservation for any length of time have often thought "if only we'd kept hold of such-and-such...". And, the real proof of returning to life will be a resumption of public passenger train services, and there seems to be no immediate prospect of that.

People* grab what they can to 'preserve' it and that may have prevented something being scrapped and lost forever, but sometimes the best thing that can happen is for a loco to be sold on to someone more able to get it running again.

    * I don't know the current owner (or his financial situation or engineering skills) so I hope I am not doing him an injustice is saying the above.

not remotely exceptional that - Woodford Halse had 25 on allocation (simultaneously) 1943-44 so S160s are totally right for the London Extension.

I'm hoping that the reported move of the B1 from the North Yorkshire Moors is an indication that things may be beginning to move.

it may well be that if little progress is being made and space taken up and little rent , the time has come to force the issue and this is the result.

Facebook page referenced that Covid have caused a number of volunteers supporting the project to move on

Are the Manning Wardle and Hudswell tank engines owned by the railway or private individuals? I’m really interested in seeing these return to steam.

All steam locos on site are privately owned. To my knowledge the only locos owned by the railway are small diesel shunters (smaller than 08 small)

There were 2 shunters in the consist being shunted, a Ruston and one other. Will check the photographs I took when I get home and upload. There was the boiler and a driving carriage from a dmu as well.
Interesting reading everyone’s replies-thank you, all!!!

I believe 08114 (formerly 13180 if memory serves me right) was sold to the English Electric Preservation group a few years ago

The other shunter would have been the Sentinal H014, the 108 is a DMBS which is in the process of having the interior fitted

1264 has arrived at Ruddington. Having spoken with a member of the owning group a couple of weeks ago, I believe the plan is to send the tender away for overhaul off site first before tackling the locomotive

Given the good news about the arrival of 1264 hopefully the GCR(N)/NHR website will have an update...
