Not on topic, but what is the difference between the two pictures above (no, not that they are different locations!) The lower one looks like the ones you see in SR magazine, and looks artificial, almost painting-like. The top one looks more true to life. What are they doing, as I don' t like the pics in SR mag for this reason?

 

Well my pic was shot in RAW, converted to Jpeg. and then resized to suit the forum, no enhancing in Photoshop or Paintshop Pro, but the second pic shows some stunning detail.

 

I'll take that as a compliment if you think this looks like something from a railway magazine

What I've done with this shot is to use layer masking in Photoshop to slightly lighten the shadows which were covering the motion, tender and carriage underframes. As I shot this in RAW the details were still there to be revealed. I thought the sun would be round further at that time - another 10 mins and it would have been over my shoulder. Other than that the only other work done to the shot was white balance adjustment, slight sharpening, and a touch of noise reduction - nothing more than the camera would have done in producing a JPG from the same RAW data.
