    The Bolton - Barrow train you mention (1C53) was coming off the Bolton line at Euxton Jn as the Jubilee approached you so the Jub's signal at Euxton Jn would be at red. Once 1C53 cleared the Jn. the Jub would get greens.

    I considered most of the wrong possibilities whilst overlooking the right answer (and something that I was already aware of). Thanks for putting me back on the straight and narrow - for now! As it turned out Mr Kelly put on a good show for us and (understandably) the diesel helped.

    Yes, from the bridge just north of the sidings. Needed my step to see over the hedge even at this time of year.
