It was a little after 6pm, the forecast rain had failed to materialise. It was decision time, the sky to the south was heavy, dark, threatening, the colour of a Welsh slate roof on a dismal November day in Burnley and the clouds were slowly edging this way. To the north the sky was lighter and in places the clouds were pierced by the odd shaft of sunlight. Wilpshire lay due north, I decided to go for it!

Nine times out of ten I opt for the overbridge beyond Wilpshire summit but this time I settled for Ramsgreave and Wilpshire station. As I parked I received a text from Mrs W - "Torrential rain" [at home]. It was still dry here but I grabbed my raincoat and brolly and headed for the up side of the station and stood at the Blackburn end of the platform. It was becoming darker by the second, the question was "would the train beat the rain?"

After a few minutes (still not raining) 46100 could be heard as she left the tunnel. Then she appeared at the "corner", the exhaust beat was steady, even, purposeful and ever louder as she blasted up the bank and towards the station. Into the platforms, coming ever closer and passing only a couple of feet from my left shoulder. The carriages fairly whizzed past and then the 47; a bit more noise than this morning - let's settle for "taking its own weight". And then it was gone and as the sound faded spots of rain began to fall. I gathered up my stuff and headed back to the car, the rain continued without getting heavier. The Fellsman was RT and travelling at around 26 mph.

The rain stopped but less than 500 yds into my journey home, it must have rained quite hard as the road and pavements were wet. As I continued I was treated to a huge, bright rainbow that persisted for at least 5 minutes, then after a brief light shower the sky cleared. There were large puddles outside Wistle Towers, the temperature had dropped from 20 to 15C. So, "seen a train and didn't get wet" - Lucky Oswald!

A rather bizarre and somewhat spooky statistic occurred to me this week. 46100 has now hauled four tours over the Settle Carlisle. Three of those occasions have been the day after 46115. These two photos were taken 24 hours and 3 minutes apart. Can you "Scot the difference" (groan).

Under ever more threatening skies Royal Scot blasts through Ramsgreave and Wilpshire station with the returning Fellsman. It was significantly darker than it appears on screen. Video cameras (and mobile phones) have a well earned reputation for enhancing low light levels, making the dim appear brighter. This ability does not appear to extend to the youth in the grey "trakkies" who felt compelled to proclaim that he loved trains!!?

Time was when 46100 looked like the shiny show pony and 46115 the grimy workhorse. Role reversal taking place?

Great fun on this last week, cannot recommend a trip in Premier with Saphos enough.
