Nice that Howard. I will have to return to that bridge again. Must be 8 years since I was there last!

It’s a few years since I was there. Changed a bit with the palisade fencing that goes across the bridge, tip toe job now.

This ‘Dalesman’ had an unexpected sting in its tail, and that was 46115 taking off like a scalded cat out of Blackburn and reaching 62 by Pleasington, all accompanied by that tremendous roar. This little but spectacular cameo also gave us a rare non-stop run to Preston.

The northbound journey up the ‘drag’ was a much quieter affair but understandably caution was being used to avoid lineside fires and also water conservation would possibly be in mind as we did not stop at Langwathby, Settle Jn-Blea Moor Box was completed in 26:35.

Southbound, Carlisle-Appleby was done in 44:54; this included a stop of near two minutes at Petteril Bridge and the Armathwaite TSR, plenty of vigour on this section. Then Appleby-Ais Gill was 26:58, 22:10 on the Blue Riband section with a minimum of 33.5 at Milepost 260. Wilpshire Bank was quite something as we entered the tunnel at 30 after a crawl through Whalley, with 26 by the summit. The soundtrack in itself above Langho was mesmerising.

A word of thanks to all West Coast crews yesterday for producing these brilliant set of results in such heat, a few cold ones at Carnforth would be well earned!

Were leaking taps prevalent on Stanier locomotives back in the day, I don't recall them happening as regularly even on the tours I went on in the 80's, seem to be a feature of pretty much every run these days?

I remember it back in the 60s and the same problem seemed that afflict the BR Standards. I think it was small slivers of metal from the piston and valve rings sticking in the drain valves and jamming them open.

Quite commonly seen in my spotting days in the 60's in Lancaster. Probably seems more prevalent these days as most trips are recorded at various locations and published online

Indeed, obviously I was just a glint in my fathers eye back in the day whilst during my touring days in the late 70's-80's whilst we had run pasts (Garsdale and Ribblehead seemed to be favourites) seeing video was very rare and anything I spectated on (rather than being on the train) was down south and therefore not susceptible to the Stanier gremlins.

Classic 60s scene: green Scot, red LMR headboard, Midland Railway box, maroon Mk1s, semaphore signal. Echoes of the Waverley and the Thames-Clyde Express. Many thanks!

No doubt which of the Carnforth Fleet is the best at the moment. With its 13 coach train, 46115 bested 35018 with 12 from Carlisle to Appleby by 4 minutes and we didn't have a stop at Paterrill Bridge Jn. Bested Appleby to Ais Gill by a few seconds but oddly 13 seconds slower on the Blue Riband Section. And again the Scot outperformed the Merchant on the climb to Wilpshire with an extra coach but Mick would have to have been a bit more cautious away from the slack over the Arches and on the climb with the big Pacific.

Why does one engine being driven harder than another make it a better engine? I'm curious as to the logic of some of the assessments so eagerly discussed on here.
