An exclusive photo shoot for Empire magazine took place at the NYMR featuring Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible shoot. The NYMR features on the subscriber issue front cover and in the picture below. I subscribe to the magazine so will see what is in the latest issue when it arrives. The picture has already been tinkered with though IMG_20210509_004544.jpg IMG_20210509_004709.jpg

Here is the Magazine cover shot with part of the NYMR in the background. Can anyone identify the exact location IMG_20210509_103606.jpg

Nerdy sort of question: How robust was that replica? I'm thinking that, given it was used in motion and not just static, it must have been built to some kind of standard? For example, frames strong enough to take the loads of being propelled; wheels machined to correct profile; springing and axle box lubrication functioning etc. Did it have operable brakes?

Who constructed it in the first place?

It is strong enough to self propel at 40 mph.
As I pointed out the other day it is a Steam Outline model and maybe a link to the Hornby Ringfield motor as the actual Cummins Diesel is in the tender.
However many of the shots will see it with the container flats and coaches when it is propelled by the 2 class 66 locos.
Not sure who built it but a number of staff from an engineering firm near Bury were on hand most of the time.

I don't think it has yet. The Mission Impossible crew were due to be working at Dalton Quarry in Derbyshire for 20 weeks with the crash shoot taking place over two days. Apparently a big water tank has to be built in a hole in the bottom of the quarry before the crash takes place. When the locals hear a big bang it probably means they have crashed the train.

Local papers reporting it will be filmed 14th and 15th, so less than a week from now.

Thanks. I hadn’t realised it was self-propelled as well. That’s a lot of effort to go to.

I don't think I'm giving away confidential information by saying it is powered by a Scania engine in the tender and the loco has a design speed of 40 mph. It is only designed to propel itself and, when on a train of coaches, requires additional motive power. The wheelsets are all properly designed and verified but not of the more orthodox construction of wheels being pressed onto axles, being bolted onto hubs on the axles. Conventional tyres are fitted. The valve gear is a simulation of Walschaerts with all moving parts although of lightweight construction. The frames are robust but the 'body' is of lightweight construction from thin steel sheet and fibreglass. Buffers and drawgear are all standard railway items. Brakes are fitted, the braking system being more akin to a HGV. Onboard smoke and steam generators are fitted. I've no idea of cost but have heard figures mentioned. Making blockbuster movies isn't a cheap business.

That would explain why Riley and Son were thanked by the director in a tweet the other week.

So does anyone know what the plan is for tomorrow, locos rostered etc ? Is the diesel in use on the Whitby trains ? The FAQ section states the plan is for a full steam service, is this still the plan. Is the internal service a full length train or is that the freedom service ?

    Regards

Latest post in the NYMR MPD Facebook Group Suggests 825 and 5428 out of Newbridge/Pickering tomorrow and 44871 from Grosmont.

Looking at the timings of things and coming to an assumption, it is very similar to the Bronze/Silver timetables from pre-covid times - so possible Diesel use on the last trip back from Whitby. As I assume some of the trips earlier in the day may come back from Whitby ECS to then form the internal services?

NYMR website is tonight showing planned locos for tomorrow on the one page download, much like they did (very helpfully) pre-Covid. Timetable looks identical to Bronze timetable from before, we are on holiday in North Yorkshire next week hoping to get over at some point!

Many thanks. Is that full a full line working from the class 25 on the last train of the day to Pickering ?

Only Grosmont to Whitby and back. It allows the Pickering based steam loco to be serviced and examined.

Received the magazine last week. Unfortunately in the Mission Impossible article it does not say anything about the Filming at the NYMR, it just says that the picture of Tom Cruise on the loco was taken at Pickering.
