    Hi All

This is not a photo plug but a question regarding 46106 Gordon Highlander.
Was this the only Scot fitted with Britannia style deflectors?
Was fitting them not a success?

I think 46106 was the only Royal Scot with straight smoke deflectors under BR ownership and after rebuilding. Others had them in LMS days, as did some of the Patriot class, though without the upper handrail.

'Gordon Highlander' was the only re-built 'Scot' with this type of smoke deflectors. There were a number of experiments with various methods of smoke deflection on the 1930s with the original parallel boiler Scots.

See (amongst other references) 'The Book of the Royal Scots' (Sixsmith, Irwell Press, 2008).

Yes, the straight type (and there were sub-types of these) were fitted to the parallel Scots only, with the exception of 6106.

The LMS tried to make their smoke deflectors aesthetically pleasing by following the contour of the firebox casing, which was entirely vertical on the original engines but with a slight inwards bevel or curve at the top. The rebuilds' firebox casings followed the shape of the 'box itself, so their S curves were reflected in the smoke deflectors. Unfortunately, these were rather short and possibly didn't channel enough air down the boiler casing to effectively lift the steam, so 6106 was given bigger ones as an experiment.

Only one rebuilt Royal Scot received smoke deflectors in LMS days. That was 6115, which had them fitted in 1947. All the rest had them fitted in B.R. days including 46106. 46106 had its smoke deflectors replaced with the B.R. style deflectors in the mid 1950s.

Whilst talking about oddeties within a class of locomotives, would i be right in thinking 70045 lord rowallen was the only brittania with oval buffers?
