And for many years it's been common practice to refer to steam locos, ships, cars etc as "she". Just because they may have male names doesn't change that IMO. I refer to the likes of 70013, 60007, 30777, 850 etc as "she", and as a steam loco has often been said to be the closest thing to a living breathing human, I fail to see your problem.

I've heard a myth as to why steam locos are referred to as "females" and that reason is because they carry passengers just like a female would carry a baby. Wonder how true that is?
On another note I saw 850 today and looks as though she was been scrubbed up with enough people working on her, I even saw someone polishing springs!!

Or another reason why that are classed as "She" might also be the fact that they can be temperamental... My Father who was an ex-engineman has always referred to them as "She's"
So was there any sign of Brasso being applied?

Given how often large mechanical objects are referred to as female (not just steam engines), i suspect its more to do with said large mechanical objects being traditionally built, used and maintained almost exclusively by men... :)

From experience in the Steam Days. Steam Locos were called "She*s", being that they could be tempermental like some females One minute they would Steam, the next they wouldnt. One minute there power was brilliant, and the next it wasnt; especially prior to entering eastleigh Works!

Please note, that in this day and age, i have used the words "could", and "some"! [-o<

Nice to see 850 at Ropley at last. \:D/ Now I must get down there myself to see her/him?? #-o
Any way looking at the MHR Loco roster it has been "wiped" as I guess it is being changed. 850 was scheduled for use on Friday 20th Feb but 850 has now been removed from the box . Does anyone know when 850 will actually be running now?

The plan is still to use her on Friday on a private train. Plus, she will need a light engine test run before then, probably Thursday.
